FWIW I run a wired backhaul, so your results may differ Jamie,
A quirk I found with my mesh.
If I run 5GHz-2 on Control Channel > Auto = Bandwidth defaults to 80 MHz
Run 5GHz-2 Control Channel > manual selected (any channel) = Bandwidth holds 160 MHz
(auto selects channel 100 = 80MHz / manual channel 100 = 160 GHz)
5GHz-1 dose not follow the same behaviour, if favours 160 MHz regardless of settings.

New firmware out
ASUS ZenWIFI XT8 Firmware version 3.0.0.4.388_24609Version 3.0.0.4.388_2460949.59 MB2024/01/26Tom…You need to login in order to vote
A slight quirk. XT8 doesn’t appear in the support / search via model either.
But????
If you follow the route of Asus web site > My Account > My product(s)
The XT8 driver & tools tab, it links correctly to the firmware page????
So if you didn’t register it when purchased❗️you still won’t see it ????
Now if I only knew someone with a AX82U & has it registered? ????

Asus do state,
AiMesh connects multiple compatible ASUS routers to create a whole-home mesh WiFi network. The flexible and scalable technology lets you mix different AiMesh-compatible routers, and add new ones at any time to improve coverage.* All devices in an AiMesh network enjoy access to all the features of the main router, including gaming features, AiProtection commercial-grade security and more. Most ASUS routers already support AiMesh.
The only issue I can foresee, is if Asus releases radical changes to firmware between the 2 models,
otherwise all AI mesh routers should play nice together ????

@dodgydrains But setting a manual channel of 120 & then 100 it did sustain a 160 bandwidth
I might try this
I have tried this and confirm the same. Setting control channel to Auto, it always connects at 80MHz regardless which channel it automatically connects at. Manually selecting control channel to 100 it connects at 160MHz.
Best practice was to always set channel selection to auto & let the router do it’s own thing,
That thinking doesn’t hold out on the 2.4GHz band these days,
but with the characteristic of 5GHz, auto mode would have been the sensible default option,so stumbled upon this little quirk by accident.
Hopefully this opens up maximum bandwidth with fallback capabilities if needed,
Altho that’s down to the coding by Asus! so only time will tell.Tom…

@dodgydrains given that the 160MHz is overkill for my 80/20 fttc line, I’ve never had the need to benchmark or bench test it so to speak.
But I have noticed a quirk with regards to it’s behaviour on my setup,
On 5GHz-2, 20/40/80/160 enabled & channel set to auto, (always defaulted to 100) & bandwidth always 80MHz)
But setting a manual channel of 120 & then 100 it did sustain a 160 bandwidth, admittedly I didn’t give the manual selection of channel 100 any time to fully bed in & maybe roll back to 80MHz, but having settled on channel 124, it’s been solid on the 160 bandwidth under it’s own steam, (goes without saying ymmv)
A quirk with respect to Asus, or local environmental conditions here, that’s 1 finding I could never nail down 1 way or the other.
Edit: 4 got 2 mention, always had ethernet connection from node & now running a pair of XT9’s instead of xt8’s

As is the norm lately, the router had announced that new firmware was available before if went live via the Asus website,
I did some Google searches further afield from the UK on the 22068 fw for validation & came across the reports of the instability issues,
tho it appears Asus have the used the same version # for both the XT8 & XT9,
so the reports of instability issues I landed on came from both variants.

Any reason why ASUS is no longer showing release date of Firmware updates on their web site ?
As an update on why ASUS are no longer showing release dates of there firmware’s, this has now been escalated to top management at ASUS (political) but this policy has been applied to all ASUS type products, not just routers. Incase this does not get resolved, I have offered the ASUS Router team a suggestion for a basic numbering system for there firmware’s which does include dates etc, so maybe an option going forward for the ASUS Router team to consider, also<noscript>

The battle is not yet lost<noscript>

So not just an oversight by Asus, 🙁
I would have placed a bet on it being the dev’s 😁
Letting dev’s out into the real world where there are mince pies & booze freely available normally dose not end well 🤭🤭🤭
Cheers UK Sentinel

So I have had initial feedback from ASUS and seems/thinks this maybe an oversight on behalf of ASUS web team. The contact I used at ASUS (router team) said they would look into this and hopefully get this fixed. Alas ASUS is such a big company and if one area, say PC’s , do not want dates showing, that policy may have been applied across there whole web presence, but hopefully this can be reversed. I will of course keep chasing ASUS regarding release date no longer alongside the version release

Much appreciated 👍

Isp is sky, using a sky router! Can you feel my pain
Enjoy the lack of wifi with your SKY router – When/If XT9 arrive, hope you will appreciate the 5GHz band (5GHz-1) that supports the 160MHz channel and also runs on a slightly more powerful CPU<noscript>

As I await a full fat fibre connection, even the xt8’s were over kill for my fttc line, but the slightly better spec Vs the slight cost difference was an easy decision to make,
altho at that might turn around & bite back yet,

I’m not able to test any fw at the moment, back on isp router🤬
for whatever reason Asus found my XT8’s at fault so directed me back to the supplying retailer for a resolution,
Long story short, I traded up to a pair of XT9’s over the Black Friday weekend at a sale price with another retailer,
My XT8’s returned via Royal Mail ( delayed with strike action or lost in transit) so no refund as yet)
No XT9’s as retailer screwed up & none in stock ( tho currently still shows stock available) for next day delivery!
I might get them in the new year! they think! (but I can’t get a straight answer from them)Post sale prices on both XT8’s & XT9’s have shot up everywhere,
Isp is sky, using a sky router! Can you feel my pain🤭
