The Netgear D7000 v1 also has the Broadcom (63138) chipset and had real issues, Netgear D7000 v2  introduced  the Intel (Lantiq) VRX318. for DSL

I assume under the deal they have with Broadcom, they are allowed so many changes, or have to pay for changes to firmware blobs, so I guess this is why (maybe) the releases are slower with this chipset ?.

But yes, they should do much better, even if it was just updates to security/vulnerabilities etc.

Thanks for the news, ASUS updated the DSL-AC68U to add that patch (ACMEv2) a couple of weeks ago, so looks like they (ASUS) are working their way through all there units

Agree totally, defence in depth (not putting all your eggs into  a single basket) is a great way to reduce risk exposure, by not relying on a single solution

I would be surprised if ASUS abandon these models, I just guess they are a low priority and are having issues obtaining decent code blobs from chipset manufacturers etc.

But I do agree, the DSL-AC88U and others had there moment and  owners/new customers should look elsewhere.

Not defending ASUS, but Netgear with the XR500 (DumaOS) are as poor as ASUS DSL with  updates. (all  a poor service really)

As an update on DSL-AC88U / DSL-AC3100 /DSL-AC3100 Annex B  Firmware progress, I spoke with ASUS this morning and unfortunately it appears that no new firmware will be available this side of Xmas.

Sorry all, I no longer ask why ‘life is to short’

The Flash Hacked RT-AC86U (2017 model) is still up and running, I plan to reboot tomorrow to see if it starts correctly (or not)

The Router has a few issues, Wifi / DNS etc. I assume because as Firmware was first introduced  in April 2019, the firmware is still young ?

I disable the LED Controller, so this did not seem to cause any issues and for testing it is going well

Update: Well I rebooted the RT-AC86U this morning and the router rebooted as expected, I have since flashed the RT-AC86U back with ASUSWRT-Merlin as missing the options a fully functional ASUSWRT-Merlin Router

Note: Will be interesting to try this experiment in say 6-12 months time, when the GT-AC2900 firmware has matured somewhat and then I can see if it is worth buying the GT-AC2900 outright (prices may have dropped a little more also)

Yes, Wired Backhaul is yet to be introduced by ASUS for DSL-AC68U (as far as I recall)

2018 are the troublesome radio ones, thanks for update and hopefully this will help @manzaboy if they have any issues

A RT-AC86U (lovely device) The Zyxel VM1312 contains the BCM63168U chipset (Broadcom) the DSL-AC68U uses a MediaTek chipset for DSL which for UK users has caused many issues and G.inp is not usually supported.

So use Zyxel as Modem (Bridge) then uses RT-AC86U (as primary AiMesh) and set DSL-AC68U as Child/Node (AiMesh) the latest DSL-AC68U firmware supports AiMesh for child /node option.

Version 3.0.0.4.384_81140  (from ASUS download Servers)

I was using AiMesh and it worked well ;-)

BTW – on the rear of the RT-AC86U, there is a label with a year of manufacture on it, I cannot recall but I seem to remember units made in 2017 may have had (some) 2.4GHz wifi radio issues and others have reported that on occasions the router will not restart after it has been UI rebooted ?

No such thing as the perfect router, but that’s the price for mass production

I have noticed Sometimes RT-AC86U after setting router to reboot does stays down, but early days for the GT (RT-AC86U) and will let you know if I see similar behaviour with modified RT-AC86U

Update: I Have rebooted the RT-AC86U three consecutive mornings and so far it starts as expected, will leave it running for a few days and see if issue appears over time and after a reboot via UI etc.

Yes, because I plan to convert back my RT-AC86U to run ASUSWRT-Merlins firmware, I have not modified any system files etc. etc.

So I Factory Reset RT-AC86U, then put it into recovery mode and flashed using ASUS Recovery tool with an old  (first release) of the GT-AC2900 Firmware.

As long as the router is not then factory reset, it pick ups latest GT-AC1900 2900 firmware when it goes online after manual configuration.

At one point (I was testing) I flashed the RT-AC86U with GT-AC2900 firmware and then performed a factory reset,  after the reboot and configuring the RT-AC86U, it notified me there was an update, which I applied and it resorted back to the RT-AC86U ASUSWRT UI.

Early days yet, but looks good and works well, only have noticed that the option for Game Port Prioritiation > (level 1) > there is not an option to Select “Dedicated gaming port that prioritizes network traffic to connected devices”. This maybe due to Firmware not being as good as it should be ?

But for testing purposes, very happy I am
