Ok, so I flashed DSL-AC88U with STock585 and AiProtection On or Off I achieve 50Mbps (ish) throughput,

With Beta Build586, I seemed to achieve 50 Mbps with AiProtection OFF and 20 (ish) with AiProtection enabled, I did not notice over use of CPU, but a throughput issue with AiProtection Enabled is noticeable with wifi (2.4 and 5GHz) and Ethernet.

I will let ASUS know also, even though a performance, drop, it still works and the new beta build586 does have some new features, so safer to go with build585 unless features in beta586 are required is my view.

Edit: It is believed Stable Build (Stock) 585 may have issues with AiProtection working correctly, if Build 585 is used, then AiProtection needs to be disabled and then re-enabled to work correctly and this applies after a reboot also.

It’s a beta, 😉

That is because the freaking Build 585 has the bug where sometimes AiProtection doesn’t start, try turning the AiProtection off and then on again, if you don’t get at least 55% RAM in use the AiProtection is not on, then you will get your speed down by at least 25%

Is it beta? so it is the build 585, it is rushed build so that they could deliver something even if they didn’t fix a thing…is all PR stunt

Now at least build 586 makes sure the AiProtection service starts, I have tested both “stock” 585 and beta 586

@oxygen8 – for clarity –   with build585 when AiProtection was Enabled, RAM/Memory Usage was around 240 MB, so I assumed AI was initiated Correctly when I tested, but do agree there could/is  a bug.

But this still does not explain why with Build586, the throughput is far less with AiProtection enabled, apart from another bug or a variation of the previous Ai bug.

I have noticed that it starts with 44% RAM usage so maybe it starts partially but when you restart it (the service not the router) it should be truly on and that’s when you should truly test, for the sake on being on stock firmware I went back to 585 but I get the same speed loss with both (which I never experienced with Merlin firmwares my AC3200)

I have noticed that it starts with 44% which is about 240mb (if you have 512mb RAM then 256mb should be its 50%) so maybe it starts partially but when you restart it (the service not the router) it should be truly on and that’s when you should truly test, for the sake on being on stock firmware I went back to 585 but I get the same speed loss with both (which I never experienced with Merlin firmwares my AC3200)

Interesting, just checked my DSL-AC88U beta586 and its on 252MB used (55%) so as you say, stock build585 running at 240MB, AiProtection service may need to be restarted again to be fully utilised.

So from that, as you say, maybe build585 isn’t that much better from an AiProtection perspective than 586.

I have sent ASUS the details already regarding AiProtection and the two builds, so will add this info also just incase this helps them, just need to give my DSLAM a rest otherwise DLM is going to punish me ;-0

Update: I just reloaded Stock Build585 and rebooted DSL-AC88U, indeed memory used is 240MB and then turned Off and Back ON AiProtection and Memory Usage increased to 252 MB, I also rebooted with AiProtection ON and  one occasion, memory usage was 200MB, so I agree build585 (stock) has buggy AiProtection service thus, beta build586 from a AiProtection/memory usage perspective works correctly?

Got a reply re: my IPv6 feedback and it’s a new low:

Please try configure with following. Thanks.

IPV6 – switch auto-config to disabled (Connection type also DISABLED)

So I tell them IPv6 doesn’t work and makes WiFi crash, send them my logs and their fix is basically “turn off IPv6”. (Bear in mind, in my feedback report I even told them that setting both options to disabled allowed the connection to stabilise but with no IPv6).

Is it any wonder it’s taken so long to get to where we are now?

Well on 586 I’ve noticed some pretty hefty spikes in cpu usage on both cores whilst nothing at all is happening – I’ve never turned on AI protection, not moving any files, no torrents, no streaming. I’ve attached a screen shot of one such instance. I didn’t see this happening on the 585 beta. Does anyone know if the 585 official is any different to the 585 beta?

Another forum member has also noticed this CPU spiking with beta586, I was told Official and Beta585 was the same, I am unsure if Beta585 had issues with AiProtection starting correctly, but Official585 does have this fault?

    Have you seen this?

‘The DSL-AC88U does not run Asuwrt, therefore AiMesh support is highly unlikely to ever happen’.

    ‘Flotueur said: ↑
Thanks for your input! If the dsl-ac88u is not running Asus wrt, what is it running?

RMerlin: Another firmware, maybe it was developed by another company… I don’t know the details, only that the source code was not the regular Asuswrt code’.

‘I think that device’s firmware is based on OpenWRT’

Really, that is very interesting, I will ask the DSL team as ASUSWRT is/was based on Tomato, ?

Really, that is very interesting, I will ask the DSL team as ASUSWRT is/was based on Tomato, ?

I asked ASUS in several emails regarding if the underlying source code for the DSL-AC88U has changed as is not using regular Asuswrt code, but more based/like on OpenWRT.

Each time ASUS responding, saying ASUSWRT is a style UI with a similar set of features and is not defined (my interpretation) by the underlying code it is based upon.

ASUS did say that different routers use different SDK kits (software development kits) for various routers, so this is maybe (I am not a coder) where the differences are?

Usually ASUS are very open with me, but this time they are being a little vague, so we can only assume, underlying code is different from normal/other ASUSWRT code used in ASUS models, but will continue to look and feel like traditional ASUSWRT.

Maybe this explains why it’s all a bit of a mess? This router was launched with promises it looks unlikely asus are going to keep. I can’t say I’ve been impressed so far.

I had also hoped, after all that happened with the DSL-AC68U, this new DSL-AC88U, would be so much better (in all respects) alas, this is hard work for us all.
