Welcome and thank you for those kind words.
That brings back old memories, the DSL-AC88U after build503 had a fix in place that stopped the clicking noise by exclude G.fast capability in Auto-Sync mode for DSL modulation.
I am surprised the EWAN port works – but glad it does and the noise is / was the Relay clicking.
Hopefully a firmware upgrade will stop the clicking and no memory issues due to non DSL being in operation ?

August 17, 2022 at 10:52 pm #20565Thank you so much!
I’ve upgraded to the latest v1.10.08 build593 and great news – the ticking has indeed gone!
I’ll report back if I encounter any of the previous memory leak / lockup issues I had before – fingers crossed as I’m not using the DSL modem component that will be ok!
Thanks again for your help – very much appreciated :)

September 20, 2022 at 3:48 pm #20936*sigh* I’m back – unfortunately the router crashing issue has reared its ugly head as before when I used to use upgraded firmwares.
Just to be 100% clear on what happens I find after a random length time (weeks, sometimes even days) that the router ‘locks-up’ and I get an internet connectivity warning on all connected devices and none of them (even a wired PC) can get to router.asus.com to check the admin page.
I reboot the router and all is well.
Ironically, after my previous post, everything appeared to be OK and I had stable operation for approximately 3 weeks.
Then (and I think this is very coincidental), I used the parental control feature to limit hours of operation on a couple of devices and literally the morning after I did this, the issue occurred.
I rebooted the router, turned off the feature and rebooted again.
This time, I got 3 days use out of the router before it crashed again today.
Really appreciate any further suggestions – seems I’m stuck between a decision to either have a clicking router or one that crashes at random times!

September 20, 2022 at 4:51 pm #20937Welcome back, I would assume by activating the ASUS AIProtection – parental control has put a drain of available RAM (memory) so this is probable why the DSL-AC88U locks up after a few days.
Did you happen to notice the available RAM at any point before the router failed ?

September 20, 2022 at 5:37 pm #20938To keep things simple: Why dont you use a timer on power supply which turns off for a minute once a day (sometimes at night e.g. 5am).
So your router refreshs daily and will work for 24h without problems. You need to login in order to vote

There is a reboot scheduler.
But I recommend going back to v1.10.05 build503 which is the most stable.
It is not worth dealing with the hassle of having no internet connection randomly in the middle of the day and a non responsive router page and you have to manually go and restart (very annoying when not home)

Thanks for checking

Thank you!
I didn’t actually, however, it definitely seems to be a memory leak after checking it this week.
When I posted this issue on the 20th, the memory was at 179MB used – it is now (today – 23rd) at 200MB used so seems to be growing by about 7MB/day.

Good suggestion!ย I would try and like to solve this within the router’s settings however if possible.

Gold star for you – thank you VERY much for this; it is massively appreciated!!
Yes, I agree v1.10.05 build503 worked perfectly for me, however, now I’ve upgraded to FTTP and only using the Ethernet WAN port – on this firmware there was an annoying mechanical ‘click’ every one minute like it was trying to restart the DSL modem as it wasn’t connecting.
Upgrading to firmware v1.10.08 build593 resolved that clicking but introduced this memory leak and causes the router to hang.
I have, however (thanks to your help – I totally missed this setting) set the router to reboot once a week @ 4am on a Sunday which isn’t ideal but minimal disruption if this resolves the issue.
I’ll let it run for a while like this and I’ll post back with my findings.
Thanks to everyone again for your suggestions – absolutely cracking forum :)

7Mb a day does not sound so bad, is AiProtection still on ?
Either way, daily or weekly reboots (power cycles) is only option remaining if you wish to keep Parental Controls active

September 24, 2022 at 2:45 am #20988Well that didn’t take long – I had a further crash in the early hours of the morning, rebooted and had another crash about 15 minutes after the reboot!
I’ve now restored the factory settings for this firmware and setup the absolute basics (PPPoE username/password, WiFi 2.4/5ghz SSID settings and port forwarding I use) – everything else left at default and not touching any AI protection settings this time.
I’ll see how long it lasts this time! :)

Not log at all, will be interesting if this enables the router to last longer between crashes, maybe worth going back to the firmware (post click) you was using ?
off course, a new router is the better option

September 24, 2022 at 1:27 pm #20996Just crashed again this morning – really strange.
This time:
- PCs connected on wired were OK
- Wireless clients weren’t able to connect to websites
- A wireless client (connected to a minecraft server) was still able to carry on playing
- The router’s admin console couldn’t be reached
Such a shame to dump the hardware – it was an expensive router and the performance is excellent when it is working.
I believe there was some suggestion earlier on in this thread to increase the group key rotation interval from the default 3600 seconds…too – I’ll get that increased and see if it makes any difference.
Other than that – it might try a different firmware again.
