I have had an email from ASUS, it just says they are looking into issue 😉

Thanks for the update, at least they responded to you.

    Day 20 – RAM used: 311MB (68%)

    Adjusted time to D-Day: T+32

It might just make it 52 days…

I started a little test the other day with my ASUS RT-AC86U, I noticed, after a reboot, it started at 339 MB RAM Used (66%) and after 2 days (just checked) it is already using 373MB RAM (73%).

SO a gradual increase looks like so affecting RT series, whether this is related to log file/ web history logs slowly filling up maybe a reason?

Curious to see what happens to your RT-AC86U after a few days.

It looks like the RAM usage increases 1% per day on the DSL-AC88U.

I have web history off. Does the unit store more of the system log than we are able to view?

I know the unit caches DNS lookups, but is it worth like 6MB/day? Perhaps someone who doesn’t use the internet everyday can test, but don’t like our chances of find someone to do that :)

I originally rebooted my RT-AC86U as I noticed RAM used was 435 MB (85%)

Routers typically use RAM for Cache/Buffers, so it could well store data such as DNS lookups as cache this would make router more efficient/quicker with that service etc.

Will report back after weekend with RAM usage for RT-AC86U, as I also am keen to see if it ever runs out of RAM?

I’m not entirely convinced that this is affecting me. I’m on day 13 and RAM usage is at 219mb, so it’s gone up maybe 2mb over the last five days. I’ve got 15 torrents running, vpn is on, AiP off, between three and five devices connected.

Yes, yours does seems to be very steady in terms of RAM usage, maybe it is a difference between DSL and RT users, the more I start looking at this sort of stuff, the deeper the regret  ;-)

Why then is jetspeed’s router steadily increasing its RAM usage – theirs is a DSL? I’m awaiting the magic 30 days up. If it gets past that I’ll stop checking it all the time!

@jestspeed’s DSL-AC88U  may have different services running like AiProtection etc, so this may account why his increased by 1% per day and yours does not increase as much, also he (I assume) may have more wifi clients etc. or using a slightly different firmware (I forget whom is running what nowadays) and after all, they are beta’s and I read somewhere, one of the recent beta’s excluded French language option, …………

the key is when RAM usage hits 90-95% to see if the OS clears some cache space etc?

On a separate observation, whenever I have tested DSL ASUS units previously, memory usage has always been around 40-60% for Broadcom and slightly lower for MediaTeK DSL routers. I am keen to understand what/why RT based wifi routers seem to use a higher percentage of RAM for normal operation?

pavlf is correct. I’m pretty much have everything off. My only difference with pavlf is that I’m not using a VPN and have about 10 wifi clients. Maybe this is the reason. Running official 585. I’ll report back next week.

Yeah, I’m on 585 too. Perhaps I should connect loads of devices and see what happens.

It would be an interesting exercise, if you have time ?

Finally ditched the dsl 88u for the rt-ac86U and works great with IPTV BT Sport channels and netflix and prime video and music with cctv and nest thermostat and nest hello with wifi NOT dropping out completely like the dsl 88u issues… like night and day between the two routers.

It is almost as if Asus are deliberately trying to sabotage their DSL line up with constant buggy firmware.  Still not heard from them regarding the possible upstream SNR bug I reported.  Probably they are just moving onto the next model just like they did with the DSL-AC68U.
