@UK Sentinel do you know if there are any beta firmware in the pipeline? Are there any suggestions from Asus that they have a fix for the ram issues people are facing?
I had this very conversation with ASUS on Thursday, yes Memory leak they are looking into, butย for some odd reason, they are not looking to release any firmware until May.
I have told them this is not ideal and hopefully they listened ;-)

March 7, 2019 at 11:38 pm #2338Well if anyone else is thinking of giving up on this router but still wants to stick with Asus then I can recommend the new RT-AX88U flashed with rmerlin firmware and coupled with a Draytek vigor 130 modem.
This thing is an utter beast. I can’t stress enough how much better this thing is over the dsl-ac88u. It sh*ts all over it in every conceivable way.
No memory leaks.
No problems with dhcp.
No random wifi disconnect problems.
The beast of a cpu doesn’t even care if I turn on every option. It never went above 10% usage.
With ai enabled on the dsl-ac88u wifi speeds would sink to almost unusable levels and max out the cpu. With the rt-ax88u the cpu use didn’t even hit 5% on the same test.
Honestly guys ditch this crappy dsl-ac88u, stick it on ebay, and swap to an rt model that supports rmerlin. I’m literally blown away by the difference and how much better this router is.
Why did I not do this months ago?!?

March 8, 2019 at 12:11 am #2342I’d like to just second what Cozak has said.
Last week i was lucky enough to sell my nearly two year old DSL AC88U for over ยฃ150. To sum the router up from a dsl sync point of view it was rock solid but as we all no the options on the router side were extremely limited and the dropping wifi was excruciating.
I have replaced it this week with aย vmg8924-b10a (bridged) for ยฃ15 from fleebay coupled with a RT AC86U (merlin firmware) for ยฃ150 from amazon so all in total a lot less than a 88u on its own.
Firstly the vmg syncs 4.5Mbps higher (my 88u already synced at 85Mbps) with no errors what so ever except for a few hundred FEC over a 7 day period.
But the 86U with merlin firmware is just out of this world in comparison.
Being able to route specific devices through a vpn thats capable of running at the full 80Mbps is amazing, my french wife is so happy that every device in the house is ‘british’ except for her french streaming stick so she can access her local equivalent of iplayer etc.
I have waited for Asus to come good with this router with stability/adding the features promised on the box but its seriously not worth it. The firmwares have all but dried up.
Easiest decision you will ever make, thank you to the forum for recommending the 86u to me!

March 8, 2019 at 7:50 am #2343ASUS RT series especially flashed with RMerlin’s firmware are excellent and offer great flexibility.
It is odd, the original DSL-AC68U, which the DSL-AC88U superseded, was great with features but DSL synch/stability was very questionable, now with the DSL-AC88U, DSL is good and everything else is far from ideal, ;-)
Third time lucky for the DSL boys next time I hope ;-)

March 13, 2019 at 4:47 am #2358Not sure if this is memory leak related, but woke up to find there was no internet connectivity.
Unlike other times, I was able to log into the admin page and check what’s going on.
- Uptime 34 days, memory usage 85%
- DSL link was up, but no data flowing
- Pings to google failed.
- Systems log show nothing of interest
I suspect the DNS resolution in the modem router was not longer operational. Rebooted and all good again.
Firmware 591 is definitely not as stable as previous firmwares.

March 13, 2019 at 8:22 am #2359If memory usage was 85% , then as you say not a memory issue causing the router to lock and reboot,
Probable a DSL/DNS/ Internal routing issue, build591 is not perfect ;-)

March 18, 2019 at 10:54 am #243628 days in, memory usage has remained steady at @211mb (46%). I turned off the VPN at the last reboot. I’ve not bothered with AiP. Seems like as long as you don’t ask it to do much it’s fine. Which is hardly the point of this router …

Indeed, I just hope for ASUS, the next firmware release is a very good one, otherwise, like the DSL-AC68U, lessons have not been learnt.

March 19, 2019 at 8:23 pm #2453I’m surprised the DSL-AC88U is getting a poor amount of firmware updates after theย DSL-AC68U received so many, at first I thought it’s because they have to get used to a new chipset coming fromย MediaTek but right now it seems like they don’t care. If they put the same amount of effort into this product as they did the DSL-AC68U it would be a very good device, if not the best currently.

The G.fast makes this ideally suited for future ISP upgrades and looks good also, just firmware, as always .โฆ..

When I last spoke with ASUS, they said around end of May, which firmware are you currently running?

March 25, 2019 at 11:58 am #2490Maybe try reverting back toย Build585ย as an option, some (other forums) have reported this more stable?
