Although I gather the AX82U is only dual band. So does this mean it won’t support an XT8 mesh operating wifi backhaul (on the third channel)?

The main differences between dual-band and tri-band routers are …

    •  Dual-band routers use two bands (2.4 GHz and 5 GHz), while tri-band routers use three bands (one 2.4 GHz and two 5 GHz).

When you AiMesh the DSL-AX82U to say an XT8 – using 5 GHz wireless backhual. the XT8 will use the Third Channel (5GHz – 2) which still leaves another 5 GHz channel available for clients to connect to. The DSL-AX82U will only have 2.4 GHz channel for clients to connect to as its 5 GHz will be used to support the Wireless backhaul.

Alas ASUS only have one Modem/Router unit currently that supports WiFi 6 802.11ax standard.

That makes complete sense, albeit it feels like a compromise.

I have an TP Link V900 DSL modem router I’ve not been using. I’m debating just using this in bridge mode rather than investing in an AX82U. It’s a pretty old modem, but will probably do the job here.

TP-Link VR900 is EoL so a risk even in Bridge mode, but it will support acting as a modem for you to then connect to your XT8.

Don’t forget to add VLAN ID 101

Just seen this publication from ASUS, seems the ZenWiFi XT8 V2 EoL (end of life) is supported until 31th December 2026 at least for the UK.

No mention of ZenWiFi XT8 V1 which is a little odd.

Good to see ZenWiFi XT8 V2 has a couple more years support at least

That is pretty decent and hopefully the V1 won’t be too much sooner.

I’m still looking for my Wi-Fi 7 successor and thought it might be the BT10 that finally went on sale last month, but now it seems there’s a BT8 which number wise sounds like the spiritual successor. And hopefully cheaper than £700+ for the twin pack.

As with everything Asus, it seems impossible to know when it will ship and even more confusing is it won an award in 2023 so why is it so late coming?

At least now there’s no rush.

Seems both the BT10 and BT8 are supported until 31st December 2028. which makes the choice easier from a support perspective  (both are the same).

Good point, I think I will drop ASUS a message to see what they say regarding EoL for the ZenWiFi XT8 V1 as in theory the ZenWiFi XT8 V1 was released in January 2020, so in theory only 4 months support remaining.

So does seem as though for the ZenWiFi AX XT8 v1 – EoL is 28th February 2025.

Note: ref mentions Singapore, but its applies to UK also.

Update: I have spoken with ASUS and they say for both the ZenWiFi AX XT8 v1 / v2 EoL for the 4 years (until 31st December 2026) and they where kind enough to update the following online documentation.

Terrible news.  It means roughly 5 years of FW support and still a lot of people facing issues with the latest FW releases.

If you have ASUS ZenWiFi AX XT8 v2 then this support last until December 2026.

Five years of support is not to bad, but yes always firmware bugs etc.

I just wish Asus would release the BT8 in the UK as the BT10 seems too expensive and, I assume by the numbering system the BT8 is closest to matching the XT8.

I now have a few devices supporting 6E and 7 so I’m all set to upgrade, especially should I decide to go from 1Gbps fibre to 1.2 or 1.6.

In the UK, EE now has a Wi-fi 7 hub for 1.6Gbps plans but I’m happy with Asus, despite some issues with the backhaul sync rate for a long time that now seems stable. Plus there’s a monthly add on cost for the newer hub and any mesh/repeater you add.

With Asus there are zero add on subscriptions, which I love in a time where everyone wants to force you to commit to paying them forever.

The problem is how bad Asus seems to be in launching and selling networking equipment here. Do they want our money?

The XT8 will likely find a new home quite easily for my parents or something, or sold on to offset the new equipment cost. Even without updates it should be good for a fair few years yet.

    Thanks.

It does appear to be a perfect successor.
