Hi,
So looking to change FTTP provider and was wondering, will new supplier need to come into property and run a new fibre cable inside the house and fit a new ONT box OR will they just run own cable outside and disconnect the ONT box and use existing fibre cable in the house from box outside to ONT box , if that makes sense?
Reason being when I got existing one installed, we drilled hole through wall and run the cable under the floor. If they will need to drill another whole and run another cable under the floor, will need to know in advance as will need to move everything and get it ready.
I’m going to contact potential new provider tomorrow and check if can use own router. Got 2 in mind so will see from there.
Thanks
Kev

July 16, 2023 at 7:09 am #25831Depends on whom you are using currently and to which fibre provider you might migrate to.
Virgin use their own kit and cables etc, other fibre suppliers maybe able to use what you have already and just replace ONT ?

July 16, 2023 at 1:24 pm #25833Considering Plusnet atm. Just been onto there chat and I have to say, slightly confused. I advised the guy with BT on FTTP and considering switching to plusnet FTTP and asked if can use own router. He said yes but need to use there hub as a modem.
I asked him to clarify as atm we have ONT box and then cable from that directly into my router.
He advised i needed the ONT box, a cable from that to there hub to act as a modem and then cable to my router.
Is this true? As plusnet is owned by BT, i was expecting it to be a like for like setup i.e. nothing changes my end, I literally just go into my router and change the username/pswd and maybe some other setting if required, not sure I want another box plugged in.
I’m wondering f the guy didn’t understand what i was referring to and thigs i have FTTC?
Thanks
Kev

July 16, 2023 at 8:35 pm #25836I think he may have been confused…
Plusnet website says the following for Full Fibre:
Installing Full Fibre boxes
We’ll fit one box inside and the other outside your home or business. The small box we’ll fit inside your premises is an Openreach box called an ONT (Optical Network Terminal). This box needs to be close to your router and they’ll both need to be near a plug socket.ONT > Router (job done)

July 16, 2023 at 8:43 pm #25838Thanks, yes this is what I thought….
Will also be in touch with BT as now I’ve got an idea on prices, I’ll see if they have any deals or can match the price etc
The other provider I was looking at is still a little new and also involves a new cable being run to property and another cable inside the house etc so bit more hassle that so IF price is suitable, might go with plusnet even stay with BT if price comes down considerably but will see how it goes, got a little bit of time before need to give notice etc.

July 16, 2023 at 9:27 pm #25840sure will do – plusnet website offering ÂŁ27.99 on there website (not sure if any discounts etc to be had for new customer etc) but that’s a rough idea.
Speed is slightly less than existing speed and the guaranteed speed is a little less.

July 16, 2023 at 9:57 pm #25843From ONT to router runs ethernet (LAN), so there is absolutely no need to be close each other.
Ethernet is defined to run upto 100m, more than enough inside any home. Here (in Austria) we get a fiber-connect box where the outside and inside fiber (much more flexibel and robust cable which may use any (even mains) pipe with enough space to pull fiber through) are spliced mostly near inlet where it comes into your home.
Outside fiber is blown through a micro-tube with 7mm diameter.
Inside fiber cable may run anywhere.
So you may put the ONT near this splice-box if you got mains (plug socket) over there and conntect via LAN to router.
Otherwise you use inhouse fiber cable to run near your router and ONT is installed over there.
Often the ONT is located inside a small network closet where all LANs from home comes together. Router may be inside too or on a better position to use its WLAN as well (then you need to run a second LAN back to an optional switch in the closet).
Others prefer ONT near router in living room (fiber and only one LAN between closet and router/ONT).You need to login in order to vote
August 5, 2023 at 2:15 pm #26256Hi all,
So just to update….
Summary of the long story for parents place…
Back in July 3rd week of July, contacted BT regarding contract was told come back on 25th July as there will be new deals and much much cheaper…
Went back on 25th July to be told oh there is a open order on account (New router then sending me for VOIP service and it wont close till end of July so come back 1st Aug)…
1st Aug, go on chat, after a lot of back and forth and them telling me Halo 3 is very good and only for existing customers now, not for new customers, despite saying I’ve never used it, never had the free engineer visit or a dongle to use if internet down and wouldn’t of paid extra for it, it just came wit the package.. eventually (only at point of advising I’d be leaving) did I get offered the price available to new customers, decided to compare it to others and guy was happy, said he would make a note and keep the offer for a few days.
Went back today (less than 1 week since initial contact/discussion) only to be told by this agent that the offer is no more and all prices are now ÂŁ50+ per month. I advised i was given a much cheaper offer earlier int he week btu he said it has expired (even though I wasn’t given an expiry date). I asked if anything more he could do as the price on there website (not logged in) was much cheaper and I was basically told to now wait 10 days before end of contract and would get better deal and to also contact loyalty department who maybe able to give better deal. I explained never had to in the past and had been offered a better deal already on chat.
So I got the impression the person didn’t really want to help much so I’ve contacted PlusNet, prices are slightly cheaper but the speeds/guarantee a bit less so I’ve gone for the 300mb package @ ÂŁ31.99 a month which is still considerably cheaper that what BT are charging me PLUS no line rental. The advantage is they will handle the switch and cancelled everything with BT. I’m just hoping they do cancel the phone line as don’t want it, not used it in years and the new plan says no phone line but didn’t get a 100% complete answer from the lady on the chat so fingers crossed.
Shame really as parents been with BT for many many years. I thought companies were meant to be stopping doing deals on for new customers and not loyal/existing customers but oh well. I know plusnet is still owned by BT so effectively they still getting the money but the main advantage is no engineer needed at the property, they will handle it all and will be a “seamless” switch I’m told. I was expecting BT to do more to retain a loyal customer but seems not.
So fingers crossed. What what I can see so far, I just need to update my router with the new username/pswd, I had thought it may of been similar to BT but looks like you ned the username/pswd.
Was going to try setup email but it doesn’t appear to have been setup yet as the info on it doesn’t show on account yet so will wait and see.
I’m expecting the service to be the same tbh, might be a bit quicker but don’t think I’ll notice much difference to be fair.
Good news is, if they seem ok, I might switch to them next year, unless BT give me a good deal :)

August 5, 2023 at 4:01 pm #26257BT and customer satisfaction /loyalty is a numbers game for them and all about the numbers that month joining / leaving and quota’s etc.
Plusnet, even though owned via BT is good value

August 5, 2023 at 4:12 pm #26259Yes, shame the packages are bit less than BT. On existing plan, i was told price was all ÂŁ50+ cheapest packages – crazy hen the website shows ÂŁ29.99 for the full fibre 100 – how they justify that I have no idea so I’ve switched and no doubt BT will be being informed sometime this week. I’m half expecting them to call or email with some “offer to stay” etc but will see.
I’m hoping as plusnet is part of BT, the connection remains as good as BT’s as I have to say I don’t think mine has ever gone down (Touch wood), always been on and working, no issues at all. Speed has stayed around the 150 speed, i think lowest speed has still been above 140 and the upload speed is always around 30 so can’t complain on that front, setup etc seems stable so as I expect plusnet uses BT infrastructure, I suspect it could well be just an account change and no actual physical work required i.e disconnect from BT and patch to plusnet, it might all be the same.. will wait and see.
Perhaps BT want to offload all broadband etc to plusnet and reduce there overheads? Maybe that’s the master plan?

I would assume BT will be contacting you to say “sorry you are thinking of leaving us” and hears our “offer to stay” deal.
will be interesting if this happens and let us know, good to know how the big players act and if the offer is any good

August 5, 2023 at 7:47 pm #26266August 26, 2023 at 12:01 am #26633Just to update on this, not had any call from BT, had a “sorry your leaving us…” but that’s all.
Have received the new router (not that I plan to use it) have not received email details yet, i enquired tonight to be told I can set it up once the switch is complete and I’m on there service.. I’m sure it said would get email details sent so will wait and see. Only chased it incase they were sending details to it etc (even though I’ve given them a separate email when signing up).
Just trying to go through stuff and change my email on accounts that use BT email as been with them for a fair time.
