Early days but so far phone is ok but only had it couple of days so time will tell.
Yes, phone fitted same case as is physically identical i.e. camera, button locations so that was a plus.
Just got to wipe it tonight and get it boxed up ready to send back tomorrow and then some money back :)

Kev #42074Have ordered one for my mum as recently had some issues with her 16e, calls cutting out, suddenly unable to make calls, having to reboot the phone. Then more recently no simcard detected.. ordered replacement sim, fitted and detects but not 100% sure if it was purely sim card as read a lot online of similar issues and sim card replacement hasn’t helped so as warranty ran out decided to bit the bullet and get a replacement as she needs her phone to be working 100% due to expected important calls she cannot afford to miss if phone not working or be unable to make a call due to no signal. She doesn’t browse the web etc, its literally just used as a old fashioned phone and may send the occasional text. So I’m trading in her existing phone, getting £255 back so cost to change isn’t too bad all things considered. Main reason for change is the 17e has the newer modem which is meant to be better for calls and browsing (although not really required) but nice plus. Just now hoping the 16e case fits ok she has at the moment as I don’t think much of a design change.

Thanks. My RT-AX86U is at parents place and where they live, the power hardly ever goes out so the Sip-passthrough isn’t a major issue as 99% of the time it’s connected with no issues. I only recall the power going out in recent years when there was a whole network outage across a large part of the country a few years back. Apart from that, it potentially is only a issue if internet goes down but seeing a router/VoIP hub are online, when it comes back up it likely just reconnects, only had internet go down once with plus net to my knowledge.
As for my home, I have the RT-AX86S and being outside of London and a bit more rural, the power comes in over head and hence any strong winds etc causes the power to them go out, only for literally couple of seconds but its enough to then cause the VoIP hub to not re-connect, hence considering changing it as it is a lower spec model than the 86U i.e. less ram etc so thought might be worth changing it just to see if it makes a difference. I presume the rt-ax86S is EOL in 2026/2027 also or perhaps already is EOL. I’m guessing router is only support for what 4 or 5 years? I forgotten when I bought it to tbh, will have to look it up but of course I may not of bought it when it was released :)
Do ASUS still continue to produce firmware updates for the 86S/86U when EOL or do they stop providing updates, even if its just security updates as opposed to new features etc? Never had a ASUS router before these 2 so not encountered the EOL scenario yet :)
I quiet like the new interface showing x devices and 2.4, 5ghz etc. Is that only on Merlin or is that on stock firmware too? the BE86U doesn’t have 6ghz band, only dual band 2.4 and 5gz but should be ok, apart from 2 mobiles and maybe 1 iPad pro, I think that is all that’s WIFI 7 compatible I have and maybe 6ghz compatible. All my IoT devices i.e. smart thermostat, smart plugs are all 2.4 only and need b/g/n I believe to work and they are fairly crucial to ensure work as I access those remotely when not at home to check things and turn on/off heating etc if outside of standard schedule so need to ensure they all continue to work hence will set up guest with same SSID and pswd to avoid having to re-do all the devices as might take a while to do. The BE96U has tri band I believe but that is way way too price, couldn’t justify the cost just for a home router.
As said I will create separate networks for mine i.e. guest – 2.4, main 2.4 and then main 5g and then connect devices to specific ones to try and reduce the number of log entries of it keep dropping and re-picking up devices it seems

Thanks, currently looking at the BE86U, one thing, it only shows WIFI data rates for WIFI 7, not a/b/g/n/ax etc, it implies it support those but doesn’t show the data rates, same for the be92u…
I’ve been checking nest thermostat and it only connects to 2.4ghz WIFI on a/g/n so need to make sure that definitely works and is supported.
I think if I go for it, I’m going to setup the WIFI differently… i.e. Guest WIFI – same as existing, main WIFI 2.4 – same as existing and then setup a separate main WIFI 5ghz. Also BE86U doesn’t have 6ghz band, only 2.4 and 5 so pretty much same as my rt-ax86s. I’m considering the BE86U as a replacement for rt-ax86s. Not sure justified to replace rt-ax86u atm.
Thinking of getting ZTE MF833 4G LTE USB dongle for fail over, doesn’t show on compatibility list from what i can tell, anyone used one with be86u and all ok? Then just ned to find a cheap preloaded sim card with x data for say 1 year or similar at a reasonable cost. Not many USB dongles out there now, everything going MiFi it seems.

Thanks, from looking the rt-ax86 doesn’t seem to have sip pass-through:-
NAT Passthrough : PPTP Pass-Through, L2TP Pass-Through, IPSec Pass-Through, RTSP Pass-Through, H.323 Pass-Through, PPPoE relay
That’s all it has. Yes, be86u might be better, bit higher price at around 260…. I presume can turn off leds like on my ax86u albeit it occasionally they come back on for no reason but not happened for a while.

Been looking at bit more, seems the BE86U might be better? even thought be92u is higher number and has 6ghz as opposed to 5gb. Can’t see the spec page: https://www.asus.com/uk/networking-iot-servers/wifi-routers/asus-wifi-routers/rt-be86u/techspec/
Anyone know if this model has sip pass-through?
It seems to also have guest network pro which need to look more at. Any one know a USB dongle that is compatible so it would auto switch to usb dongle if broadband went down and switch back to broadband when it came back up?
I’m guessing this is a newer version of the rt-ax86U/S model?

Thanks, good to see will still work. Yes have existing 2.4 but I noticed this one says WIFI 7 (2.4) so thought might of been different. I currently have a Guest network which all my IoT devices connect to so will keep that the same.
My existing VoIP has a fixed IP, however it still fails to register, even if I turn it off and back on, still fails, I have to go in and change the ports then change back. Bit annoying to have to keep doing but I don’t believe the RT-AX86S has a sip pass-through hence wondered if this may help. I did open the ports on router to match ones for VOIP but doesn’t seem to have made any difference as still has issue.
My VoIP has a little hub (for want of better work) which is wired to the router but still doesn’t register with provider. Phone always connects wireless to the hub but hub never registers so thought might help hopefully.
Still considering as I don’t want to spend £170 and find out I’m no better off :D Also like the idea this one will auto switch to a mobile network via USB if broadband goes down, which I might explore again as never did it with the rt-ax86s.

So does this router work ok with Nest learning thermostat or nest 3 thermostats? Also work ok with smart plugs?
I see a interesting this called sip pass-through, I’m wondering if that would help/resolve my VOIP phone… at the moment, if power goes out (usually in bad weather) the VOIP phone wont re-connect to the provider, I have to either power both off and back on in a certain order OR I have to go into the voip box web interface, change the ports and then it works and then I change them back and it works. Rather annoying to say the least.
I see currys still got the same deal on it seems…. tempting… also considering setting up separate SSIDs for the main networks different speeds like 2.4/5/6/7 as atm my main WIFI basically combines them into one and I’m still getting lots of entries in the logs which has never been resolved so far…

Not noticed anything but then mine is just a little home setup, not likely to be target as nothing really to gain.
Not decided on what to switch to tbh as esxi no longer free etc.

My BB runs out Dec so i should be able to sign up to a new deal in Nov... #40317Renewed with PlusNet, they offered me the next speed up for £1 more so went for that. interestingly, they said would be done 21st Nov, but speed changed on 21st or 22nd, website said error occurred, cannot make changes as change in progress so I figured upgrade still in process. Went on there forums, seems there is a hidden link to the tickets and there it shows they changed the date to be done by midnight 24th nov but I didn’t get a email. Seems this is a long standing frustration, that they change the date but you don’t get informed.
