Yes, if you select HP, Tower and ESXi 7.0.2 it shows 2 x Hp Gen 10 plus on the compatibility list but no mention of needing a raid card.  As said looking on line in general searches on google shows 1 person saying you just change bios from UEFI to SATA and it works fine, another saying you need to use bootable USB stick and external storage so not too sure but as its a bit pricey, I don’t want to buy it, find it doesn’t work and then need to spend more on a controller card as they are probably 2 or 300 quid on there own.  The ilo card is extra (30 quid) just need to see if need advanced or standard license but hopefully make do with standard license and can always upgrade later if required but hopefully not.

Vmware’s site doesn’t indicate in compatibility to say “you need raid controller or change bios mode etc”

Plan would be to then sell my 2 x HP microserver gen 8’s if possible.

I haven’t but personally I’m not a fan of Dell.  Company i work for has recently moved to Dell for hardware and I have to say, they are truely appalling.  We have had soo many issue “out of the box” that is is awful.  Not to mention the ongoing issues.

I was looking at the HP microserver as the Gen 8 has been a nice little machine and the HP Gen 10 Plus is half the height and would be ideal but i’m not too sure about the compatibility with esxi.  it shows on the list bu as mentioned some varied reports on if it does/doesn’t work.  I bought the Gen 8 microservers for a good price due to cashback on offer etc but the Hp Gen 10 plus woudl be a fair bit more investment but as I’ve had no issues with the Gen 8 microserver, it’s been rock solid, albeit in a home environment, it on all the time and just sits there, its doesn’t make much noise, and just does what it says on the tin and has a ilo port so i can access it remotely if required, which is rare but very handy on odd occasion i do :)

Hi,

It must be the smart hub 2 as on previous gen smart hub they were fine and on RT-AX86U they are fine.  Sockets are the tplink HS110 smart plugs.  Been using them for prob 2 years now.  I used to have WEMO but it seems they are not doing much with them now and they were pricey so when 1 literally when bang when I turned it on one day, I’ve now switched to the TPlink ones.  As said, since I put back the RT-AX86U, smart plugs work fine so its not the smart plus, it some how a issue on smart hub 2 it seems.  Maybe I told a old one and it needs to be on for a day or so to pick up new firmware etc? not sure but I only had it on couple of hours, then discovered this issue so switch to back to the RT-AX86U (which was always the long term plan anyway).  I’ll give it a go at mine, but have a feeling I’ll get the same issue so might be a non starter in terms of using it in mine as not sure I want to go through resetting the smart plugs and re-linking to potentially get the same issue as they work flawlessly to date, even when BB gone down or power has gone one they always come back online when power is restored.

Thanks, yes – RT AX86U is in parents place and is now in use with the FTTP so was going to take the smart hub 2 and try at mine, just to see if it improves wifi over the previous model as it is very slow, much slower tan the claimed speeds getting via LAN cable.  If i reboot the smart hub, wifi speeds are ok for a while but usually after a day or 2, it goes back to being very slow.  Most of the time I’m on cable but can be annoying when get phone updates etc which can take forever to download due to the slowness on wifi so will try the smart hub 2.  The sockets smartplugs had issues with smart hub 2 and i even turned off 5G as you can’t have separate SSIDs on smart hub 2 it seems so i turned of 5g incase that was having a issue a smart plugs only work on 2.4 but no change.  AS soon as i put back the ASUS router, they all connected fine and stayed connected so I’m thinking its the smarthub 2.  I set it to the same pswd I had on previous smart hub, which was fine but it did say it was a weak password, whereas previous smart hub said it was strong so i guessed that have increased the password requirements now and mine now falls under weak (orange bar, 3/4 of the way along, not very weak etc so maybe i need to change it all but will try and see how it goes after a few weeks when i know the Asus is stable and likely wont need it.  At the moment, keeping it encase of issues, i can plug it back in to see if same issues before reporting to BT etc.

Hi, Just seen Asus has new firmware available for the RT-AX86U (Version 3.0.0.4.386.45375) Has anyone tested this at all?

Have just had Full fibre installed and after having a issue with some smart plugs keep dropping connection after 1 or 2 mins of connecting to WIFI, I’ve removed the smart hub 2 and placed the RT-AX86U so now reluctant to make any changes for a while until I know everything is stable so just wondering if anyone has tested the above and if all is ok so i can update it in a couple of weeks or so time.

Thanks both.  Due to the size restrictions, unable to get OLED for parents so this Panasonic maybe the way forward.  Any alternatives you suggest? Is this a 2021 Panasonic or 2020 model?

Hi thanks.

TV does look nice but max size they can fit is 43″ due to a unit and wall (sits in the corner of the room) so that’s most it can be.  Yes, I’ve always seen good reviews for Sony TVs etc but they are always much higher priced and I’m not sure the higher price is justified in some cases, not all but I find anything with Sony brand is higher priced, even cameras :)

When moving to FTTP, they have the choice of keeping line/telephone number. As the line rental is paid upfront until end of the year, they will keep the line for now whilst trying out VOIP and seeing if its ok.  If it works out ok, plan is to then advise BT we no longer want the line or the number and hence that will cease in December and then they will be saving the line rental charge and just continue to pay the internet fee.  Fingers cross the VOIP works ok, if not as said we have another VOIP provider we can try.

Hi, Thanks for info! ah great, my BT master socket is where I want them to put the ONT box so I’m going to leave the floor board up so the can drop the cable under the floor and I’ve put a plastic tube under the floor to cross the hall with  a cable running through it which they can attach the fibre cable and then pull it through which brings it up right next to the master socket and then there is space on the wall to mount the ONT box as required.  The router then sits on a shelf above this so easy to connect up plus my network switch etc is there also so all in one place for easy access etc.

10m is plenty long enough.  I have power sockets by the BT master socket so all simple to connect up.  By removing Draytek model and ASUS router (temporarily) I’ve freed up 2 sockets for ONT & new BT router.  I’ll remove remove the BT router and put back just my ASUS router once engineer is gone and I’m happy everything is working etc.

I’ve signup to a VOIP service provider. We have a gigaset home phone which I discovered has a ethernet port on the black box which I can connect to my network and therefore not need the RJ11 to BT socket cable and it is VOIP capable so I’ve put in the details for my VOIP provider but currently waiting account to become live before I can test it.  Landline is seldom used to place calls , it’s mostly to receive calls.

At present line rental runs to end of the year so if this VOIP service works ok, we plan to stop the line rental which means will just pay for the FTTP which is a reasonable price.  If this VOIP provider doesn’t work out or has issues etc then we still have some time to try out different providers before end of the year to hopefully avoid paying the line rental again as from what I understand I dont need a line to have fttp so effectively can drop it and save approx. £20 a month line rental. So get faster internet for few quid extra a month and drop line rental saving £20 a month = win win.  Even if parents find they use the landline more than they think, they can sign upto a call package which means they will still save £10 a month at worst case scenario but I’m hoping they use mobiles more (inc. minutes in plans etc) so should negate needing a call plan on landline and they just pay for any calls they make I’m hoping.

Hi all,

I’m re-looking at this now as parents decided to move to FTTP and drop the landline, save on the line rental and are signing up to a VOIP service provider as it will work out cheaper as they are being offered FTTP for only few quid more each month but are not being offered BT’s Digital Voice service as that seems to be only select people at present, if available in your area and online ordering didn’t mention BT voice at all.

Couple of further questions, has the ONT box got smaller? I’ve seen some pictures online and it seems a much smaller square box now as opposed to the bigger square box they used to supply but maybe that is due to something else?

According to BT they *must* use the SmartHub2 they provide in order to access the internet, surely not? Surely we can just plug the cable from ONT box into the Asus Router (after they have completed install)? I presume no changes will need to be made to the connection info on Asus router? At present using Draytek modem and Asus router (AX86U), although I’ve just switched it back to the BT smarthub for when engineer comes so it all look “standard”

Does anyone know how the install will take place?  Will they place a box on the wall outside the house and then drill a whole through to then run a cable into the house and into the ONT box?

Anyone know how long the fibre cable can be inside the house? as they will need to drill whole in wall into the front room and then run a cable to where BT main socket is as that’s where router is at present and is an ideal location as it’s out the way.

So I did the update a few days ago, didn’t loose any settings or SSID name changes, not noticed much difference, although the AIMesh page is in a different font it seems, unsure why but as I don’t use it, no real issue for me.

Yes, I saw that, just wondered by router didn’t flag it when i logged in o say newer version available?

I saw on another forum someone saying after update, fonts are weird just on Aimesh age, auto update feature is back (implying it was removed in a previous version?) but also some have said performance/download speeds better are are getting close to there full speeds.

Anyone here tried it? Also seen comments about WIFI SSID name(s) changing after update and qos being enabled.
