Hi, no not yet, it seems on closer look, the gen 10 only seems to support 6.7 not version 7.0 so wondering if a new microserver is due?  Also looking to see if any other makes do small microserver type machines which maybe include a raid card etc for hopefully cheaper money :)

Yes, my synology nas is in raid 5 BUT I’m effectively up to what is considered the safe limit and if I was to expand it, i need to move to raid 6 which effectively means buying 2 drives to increase capacity as 1 would be used for the parity etc so that the raid could suffer upto 2 drive failures at the same time. Hence my idea to maybe se ISCSI but upon looking I’m seeing some reports of slowness and poor performance so I think i might just get 2 drives for the server and mirror them and move the data to those for now – probably the cheapest and safest option as the micro server has 4 drive bays and I’m only using 2 (1 esxi OS, 1 vm’s)

Also no clear info yet on the gen 10 and solution seems to be to use a USB stick with bootable esxi on it inside the server and then use the drives in sata mode as regular drives but i tend to leave server on and not sure I’m keen on leaving a USB stick plugged into the server internally 24/7 with it being on etc.

Also I’ve recently found out there are to be some changes at my work and effectively we are being asked to do our existing role plus a role that is considered a entry level position so will see what happens here as not sure if they can enforce this or if they are simply trying there luck so at the moment I’ve decided to hold fire, see how this goes and i think win2012 is EOL in 2025 so prices may come down or newer boxes appear.  In currently climate, finding a new job not overly easy as lots of people working from home etc.

My existing PC I’ve also is covered doesn’t meet the criteria for windows 11 so I’m going to have to update that also (yep – everything is come round at once lol) but I lasted updated this PC prob 2012 or maybe earlier, its a i5 CPU but prob a 2nd gen or similar and apparently I saw today they up to 12th gen lol.

Also going to downsize my PC, have a zalman full tower case, which was great when i got it as it has a handy door on the front I push and it opens and i can slide in/out the drives… However, the issue is the card they put in the case for this is only sata 3.. so when i use sata 6 drives, i get very very poor performance/hanging and tons of errors in the event log, soon as i bypass it and go direct with the sata cable, all is well so so going to get a micro atx case now so can make it bit smaller as I seldom use CD/DVDs and I no longer need multiple drives in my machine, I’m just going to have 2 going forward.  m.2 drive for OS and either a SSD or HD for data as I got one 4b HD now so will just re-instate it.

I’m not sure, its a idea just to get something that works but if sonos can be made to work, great.

Hiya, hmm not sure, thing with 3rd party versions is you don’t know what info is being sent back to them (if any) or if there is a backdoor built in that would allow them access to my router/network etc so I’d sooner stick with stock firmware especially as it’s my main network so I do everything through it.

Yes, Sonos worked fine using BThomehub, it’s only been a issue since moving to the RT-AX86U.  I did reset the Sonos as I had to link it up to my new SSID etc as with the Asus, I’ve got a main network and a guest/iot network (for what of better description) so I reset the Sonos and joined it to the new SSID (which was fun) as initially it couldn’t be detected but after turning some of the features off on the 86U, it was then finally able to be seen and it joined no problem.  My devices have also been moved to the new SSID so that’s all ok.

I believe they probably are, I did try messing a while back with some other features turning off etc but they made n difference so i re-enabled them.

As said, big concern now is the Nest to ensure I don’t loose that connection.  I’ve just had a issue with my VOIP phone – weirdly it said it failed to register with provider so the handset is registered to the base and the base is physically cabled to the router (right next to it) but after looking online, i changed some settings on the VOIP base unit and now its registered with the provider, not sure why original settings stopped working as its been working for 2 months flawlessly and no changes have been made i.e. no router updates, no firmware on devices etc so bit odd.  Thankfully it is now all back online again but Sonos is still a issue, I’m considering getting a apple home pod mini to replace one of the Sonos and see if any better.  As long as I can play online radio (for free) and also play my music from my NAS box for free (don’t want to sign up to a music service) then i might go that route as it seems Sonos no longer want to support the older Sonos products, which was uproar over at the time so considering there cost (I paid £300 for the Play 5) I’m not planning to update to the newer versions so might look for something else and may sell my Play 5’s and One unless they miraculously start working but considering everything is moving on, I’m not even sure they can connect to 5ghz, let alone wifi 6, possibly only 2.4ghz.

I’m now almost to the point of looking for an alternative… does Nest Audio for example allow streaming music from a nas, like sonos does or is it only online services?

Hi all,

So still no joy with sonos, I’ve tried various settings, sometimes it plays few songs then it drops off, comes back and skips to next song then can play a bit of that and then it skips to next one and so on.

It’s connected to 2.4ghz wifi, these are all the first gen sonos speakers (Play 5 and One)  Unable to use with the new sonos app as says not compatible so at the moment they are effectively expensive ornaments. Even unable to stream a radio station so not even playing from my NAS.

I’ve tried looking online and <insert router> and sonos but it seems loads of them have issues with Sonos speakers as I was tempted to get a different router.

Any idea why there seems to be a lot o issues in general with sonos speakers?  Weirdly the BT homehub has no issues at all

I now have a Nest thermostat so I’m a bit reluctant play with the WIFI settings much as I don’t want to knock it out and then be unable to control heating etc.

I’ve not updated to the latest firmware released this month but it doesn’t say any changes made for sonos etc so I’m not expecting any change.

Not seen any deals yet, I’m guessing Black Friday isn’t too far away so they are keeping any deals for then?  Can you wait that long or is your contract ending imminently?  Not moving to FTTP and loosing your land line or moving to VOIP :)

Unfortunately I wont be able to take advantage of any deals (unless it is a upgrade to existing Fibre 1) as my contract doesn’t end till May next year.  I’m tempted to go FTTP but the cost is still a bit high, had a email today offering me FTTP for £39.99 – bit steep.  My existing contract i got for around £23 or £24 a month and i pay line rental up front so that reduces monthly bill substantially :) but even so, £24 to £39.99 for there basic FTTP, still bit price for me anyway.

Hi all,

Asus have released new firmware version for the RT-AX86U (3.0.0.4.386.45898) 7 Oct 2021.

Anyone tested it, any issues?

Also, I’ve noticed in the routers network map, view list of clients, it doesn’t show any access times for any wired devices, it only show access times for wireless devices (I presume this is the time it has been connected?). Any ideas why this is?

Would be nice to know how long my wired devices have been connected for as some are on all the time and others on when required.

HI all, I noticed on my HP laptop, it says CPU isn’t supported.. it is a i3 CPU, nothing fancy just good enough for general use, not games etc.  Shame as its a nice laptop but is now around 5 years old, it came with windows 10 so bit surprised its fallen out of spec for win11 so soon.

 

My current Desktop PC is out of spec also – but that is around 10 years old so fair enough, think it has a 2ng gen i5 CPU in it but again does what I need just fine, I rarely play games these days.  Next year, I’ll take a look at upgrading my PC, prices are rather high at the moment, not to mention some components in short supply etc with chips etc.

Thanks – I have a MK double wall socket (white) which has 1 x USB port and 1 x USB-C port, the USB-C specifically says 5v/3amp above it.

Hi, How is this going? I fixed my energy back in March (individual suppliers for gas/elec) as worked out bit cheaper this way and I’m not likely to want to leave early and pay the exist fees etc.  I signed up to a 2 year fixed deal for both so thankfully something worked in my favour and I’m not paying the higher prices at present.  Renewal is in 2023 so I’ll either be glad I fixed or I’ll find out prices are way more than I’ve been paying :)

Only small concern is that one of my suppliers is a small company so with the news of several going bust, I’ll have to wait and see how this goes.  Advantage of small company is that get some sort of discount on the energy they provide or some tax break etc?  Mine has less than 20k customers and so far, no reports or signs of them going under so hopefully they can ride this out fingers crossed.  Other supplier is a large company so don’t see them going anywhere.

I been with the small supplier since 2017 and always do a 2 year fixed and so far I’ve had no issues with them.  They even allow me to submit a reading which is lower than what the estimated the previous month(s) and they simply add any money they owe me to credit so so far no issues at all, works quiet well.  Bill comes via email etc so all good :)

Been with elec company just this year as switched suppliers as previous one wanted too much, so far so good although admittedly only been few months.
