I’ll tell you an absurd story that happened to me in my parents’ house where I use 4 XT8.
It is not something that has to do directly with the asus router, but it is really “special” and shows how networks are really subject to the strangest unexpected events.
Long story short, a few days ago I see that all the IoT devices I have at home (mostly wifi sockets and cameras) are offline.
I check and I see that the 2.4Ghz band doesn’t work anymore! I try to reset, reconfigure, change firmware, but nothing … the 2.4 network is gone (the router tells me that it is active instead)
Then I take one of the other 3 nodes and reconfigure it as a router … and nothing, even the 2.4Ghz does not work at that! Yet as a node I detected it, until a few hours before.
Then I understand that it does not depend on the router, and I get the idea that there may be an interference. I check the wifi sockets near the router and I discover that one (classic amazon china) is broken, in the sense that it is very hot and the LED is off. As soon as I unplugged it, the 2.4Ghz line started working again without any problem!
Absurd how a wifi socket manages to completely haywire a router!

beta version goes well ONLY on the main router… if you use it on the nodes the aimesh network won’t work anymore (the node function is broken on beta)…

I’m using, for now, 49873 on main router and 21099 on nodes…

Hi all! I am the one with the freeze problems on my 4 XT8s aimesh system… two freezes about 4/5 days after rebooting… I reverted to old “386” version.

 

Last freeze I have several (abou ten) of this errors in the log (that are the last entries before the freeze) :

Oct 16 17:31:48 dnsmasq-dhcp[27814]: failed to write /var/lib/misc/dnsmasq.leases: No space left on device (retry in 60s)

I have another xt8 aimesh system (made of 1 router + 1 node and many less wifi clients) and until now no freezes (free ram is now about 84/85mb… in other installation it was 74/75 last time I controlled before the freeze)

In my parents’ old house (with very thick stone walls) I initially installed 5 XT8s (and with 1 spare). After I moved to a new more modern apartment I brought 2 XT8 with me and I rearranged the old network with 4 (which are enough).
I must say that I am very happy with this router (and its AiMesh system)! apart from the sometimes problematic firmware updates, the AiMesh tri-band system is fully satisfying my expectations!

ps: I know I’m an Asus networking-addicted! I bought (for me or my friends), in order:
– 2 DSL-N55U A1
– 1 DSL-N55U D1
– 1 DSL-AC52U
– 1 DSL-AC55U
– 6 DSL-AC68U (great router as a stand-alone one, but not so great as AiMesh network)
– and now a total of 6 XT8!

Updated on a location with 2 XT8s… no problems and no issues, so far… but I’m still monitoring…

If all ok I’ll upgrade another place with 4 more XT8s…

From another forum it seems that “Group Key Rotation Interval” (only on backhaul wifi) causes the problem of nodes disconnections. Setting it to “zero” fixes the problem (unfortunately the setting’s modification does NOT propagate to nodes, so it is necessary to use telnet to change them too).

Personally, when I tested the newer firmware after 42095 I noticed thet the ping disconnection between nodes happened at precise time interval… thus the above thesis could be correct… I think it would be a good move to suggest Asus to check this particular aspect.

I’ll wait until I’m sure that this new firmware is stable on backhaul connection… I’ve 5 apparates so I prefer to see how it goes…

Tested 43184 (asus send it to me as a reply to my feedback)… the nodes connections’s drops are still present…

Reverted to 42095 (and all ok)… I’ve finished to do betatesting!…

yeah… not an easy choice!… perhaps asus will modify the et8’s 5ghz radio… but I’m not too optimistic…

About the XT8, yes… the last reliable firmware is the 42095… al the latters are bugged (dropping backhual connection)

 

Asus is not doing so great in firmware developing…

Although asus advertises otherwise, it is always a good thing to make a mesh network with identical equipment. Many problems often arise from small (or great) incompatibilities as in this case …

Channels 100-140 are NOT present!

XT8 has two 5ghz radios… one uses 36-64 channels, second uses 100-140 channels.
The only 5Ghz radio available for backhaul is the second

ET8 has ONLY ONE 5ghz radio. I thought that asus leaved the first (as the second was removed in favour of the 6Ghz radio) so only 36-64 channels, but from your text is clear that asus “splitted” it to cover more range: from 36 to 48 and from 149 to 165…

This will not change the fact that the ET8 doesn’t use 100-140 channels… and so the 5ghz backhaul with XT8 is simply impossibile… only 2.4Ghz is allowed

XT8 can have backhaul ONLY on 2.4Ghz or on 5Ghz on the 100-140 channels

ET8 doesn’t have 5Ghz 100-140 (but only 36-64)

…. so its logical that XT8 and ET8 can be linked together ONLY to the 2.4Ghz network
