As mentioned the other day (above) , I have run my DSL-AC88U for 2 days with no wifi (radio’s) enabled and it was interesting to see that initially my DSL-AC88U used 177Mb or Memory and in 24 Hours it increased to 264Mb and then after that the increases was very little?
I am running firmware 584 and with Wifi radio working is much greater and runs out more much more quickly, which could suggest a cache/buffer issue? (maybe) ?
177Mb @ 12:00 17/09/2018 (Started Router – First Reading)
264Mb @ 12:00 18/09/2018 (24 Hours Later)
266Mb @ 12:50 18/09/2018 (25 Hours Later)
270Mb @ 19:27 18/09/2018 (31.5 Hours Later)
277Mb @ 08:19 19/09/2018

So I rebuilt my DSL-AC88U and am running wifi etc via my RT-AC86U and see if this has any impact on the DSL-AC88U memory over a 24 hour period.
So far, 1Mb increase in 7 hours ?

Another user is currently testing an earlier firmware version, to see if the root cause can be found.
We do know for sure that the Stock 503 version works, so anybody having memory issues with their DSL-AC88U, then best head to the ASUS download servers for this release.

September 14, 2018 at 1:30 pm in reply to: Parental Controls Can someone explain how the parental controls work and how some of you are using them ? #567From my perspective, I always like to divide parental controls in two section, Time and Access.
ASUS, like TP-Link (Netgear does not) gives the ability to schedule individual clients access to the Internet (Time Scheduling) so limits for each device can be independently set, one client, childs PC can be limited to have access between 7am and 10pm ,and a teen can be adjusted to say 6am to 11:00 pm
ASUS Parental Controls via (Web and Apps Filters) can limit the type of sites that PC, device can have to, so for example, categories are, ADULT, Instant Messaging, P2P and File Transfer and Streaming and Entertainment, each section has sub categories, so you can be fairly accurate etc.
Each device can have its own Categories applied to it, so you can define Web and Apps Filtering given your particular needs/concerns, alas if your kids (for example) are a little switched ON, then they can easily change DNS address of local PC and by Pass the Web and Apps Filter, or they can put VPN,s on PC, again, another way around.
What I did, is use RMerlins Firmware, he has a section under AiProtection called DNS Filtering, and I select OPENDNS Family Shield Protection, which applies to all clients, I add my PC/Laptop to exclusion list, by using this option, if user changes local DNS, this is blocked by restricting port on firewall and also OPENDNS Family does not allow the use of VPN’s etc.
(I know, Child safety online is as much about Education, as Control), but ‘kids will be kids’ ;-)
The Categories applied (ON) all the time once set-up, so no chance of changing them to only be applicable at certain points of the day, so you do have to be careful.
ASUS also have the option to Backlist or Whitelist certain URL’s so again you can define the specific web sites if you prefer.
Hope this helps?

September 9, 2018 at 12:44 pm in reply to: Draytek Vigor 130 modem My modem never shows the correct time in its UI dashboard? #533For DNS, you will be using the Routers DNS, as DrayTek 130 is in Bridge Mode, everything passes through to Router. modem only converts what BT sends down the DSL line into something the Router can understand (PPPoE)

September 9, 2018 at 8:12 am in reply to: Draytek Vigor 130 modem My modem never shows the correct time in its UI dashboard? #530DNS is a means by which Real Name, (URL’s) are mapped to IP address, so when you type http://www.bbc.co.uk, the PC knows to go to 212.58.249.209, your DrayTeK is a modem and is in bridge mode, so any user typing in Real names, is automatically mapped to an IP address via your ASUS router, changing your DrayTeK DNS details offers no advantage, as the DNS on the modem is not used by user in a typical scenario.
Above is short explanation, as I realise DNS is way more complicated, but trying to keep user explanation user friendly.
Hope that helps?

September 7, 2018 at 9:25 pm in reply to: Draytek Vigor 130 modem My modem never shows the correct time in its UI dashboard? #525I used to wonder about that also, From the DrayTeK 130 user guide, the date and Time can be adjusted from System Maintenance > Date and Time, but as we are running the special BT approved build, this option is not available via the GUI.
When you log on to the DrayTeK 130, it should say ‘User Mode is OFF’, and I have always assumed, this means I is locked down and never found the a way to enable user mode?
I never tried the CD that came with the disk, but I assumed it does nothing extra ?

Good news then, How did you become aware of the random disconnects, was this by looking in the logs, or via using the service, and then it not being available for a couple of minutes, the DrayTeK and ASUS logs are more comprehensive, where as the logs for the Netgear D7800 are much more basic.
Either way, just keep an eye on your line stats, to see if over time, the synch speeds changes dramatically ?

Glad I asked, In my view, this is perfectly normal, the DSLAM/Exchange does periodically reset connection with modem device, just to refine connections etc, mine is also every other week, and this is regardless of DSL Chipset, I did at one stage (like you I think) have the DSL-AC68U and this re-sync’d almost every few days.
Does the Synch cause any problems, ie. does this leave router hanging afterwards, if not then I would not worry about this at all ;-)

Is this Random, once a week, every few days?

Just before you do that, when you say you have had the five disconnects, are these every day, or random, I forgot to ask last night ?

You do seem to be having fun, does the DrayTeK at any point say it is in training mode in the UI, if so then I think a call with ISP is needed, to check for line faults, (again) also make sure DrayTek 130 is running firmware 3.8.3 BT
Also maybe worth looking at ASUS router and see if you can do the following, change the settings of the router to enable baby jumbo frames and an MTU of 1508, see if this helps?
Alas a case of trial an error ;-)
