Hi, been viewing/following this forum for ages. This unit seems ok for what I use it for, nothing fancy but loads of WiFi devices. I have the latest firmware but now after 33 days up time the memory is almost 87%, it started at 25/30% when updated to latest firmware. Has anyone noticed this as I thought ASUS had finally fixed the memory leak?
Another forum member noticed that around high 80’s Percentage, they lost wifi access. but generally Mem usage is much better than it was, ASUS both DSL and RT models use lots of Mem and it is a Feature of the ASUSWRT firmware ;-)
I understand from ASUS that Mem usage will increase over time as logs are stored upon the Router (WEB History – DSL LOG) etc, these take up space, but when router hits 90% mem usage, the router being Linux, should start managed the mem usage better (so I am told)
You will have to let us know what happens when/if yours reaches 95% ?

January 26, 2019 at 11:27 am #2061Hi, thanks for reply, just checked and now memory is at 86%. I do monitor it on a regular basis so will post findings as asked. This forum/post is brilliant, loads of advice etc and have been following it when was started. Not had that much issues with my 88u unlike others on here but do not do anything fancy with it.

Thanks, your memory was 87% so that is interesting, yes please do keep us updated ;-)

January 27, 2019 at 9:37 am #2069It seems to be the luck of the draw doesn’t it? I’ve no idea why. Mine since last reboot has been pretty stable. RAM usage is steady at @50%, little variations over time, but nothing much. It’s been up for 27 days now.
It seems to me that it can reboot into slightly different states. The previous time it rebooted it ran with very low RAM usage (@43%) for a while, before inexplicably rising to 99% for a couple of days. This time it’s been solid. Someone who knows more than me may know if this could be the case. Who knows. Anyways, for the present I’m moreorless happy with mine. Saying this is usually the kiss of death.
p.s. yes, it’s great having this forum, it makes up for the loss of the ASUS ViP forums.

January 27, 2019 at 6:59 pm #2075I am using my DSL-AC88U with AiProtection and wireless turned off.ย All my devices are connected to internet via wifi mesh.ย Probably this is why after 11 days my RAM used is still 39% (178MB)

I concur! Since last posting, my reboot only lasted 12 hours before the modem/router locked up – normally I can toggle the LEDs with the front button, but in this state no response. Wifi would connect and authenticate, but I cannot access the admin page. Presumably a DHCP issue. I rebooted and it lasted 5 days before locking up again!
I bit the bullet and factory reset it. If it locks up again, I will be going back to my previous stable version of 502.

This is interesting and may point to the wifi causing the leaks (as a few of us don’t use AiProtection but still have memory leaks).
I’ve attached a chart of my memory usage over my 38 days of uptime. Extremely linear, indicating something in my setup is causing it. I have disabled wifi scheduling to see if that isolates another variable.

January 29, 2019 at 7:37 am #2084The memory usage of a Linux router mainly consists of cache/buffering and so a build up over time is expected, but do agree when the limits hit 90%, there is concerns as temp files etc, should be cleared …..
I assume issues are around the DSL CPU (BCM63138) and another component (maybe wifi) and am waiting for when an DSL-AC88U owner hits 95% to see if DSL-AC88U falls over so I can then pass this information back to ASUS for further investigation.
BTW – according to ASUS, the next formal/stock//official firmware release for the DSL-AC88U is planned for June/2019, but they will be releasing interim Betas during this timeframe.

Congrats and this in interesting and not in a good way, if you have time, could you list all the services you are running, ie. AiProtection, Wifi (SmartConnect – Guest Network), Parental Controls (Webs Access/Time Schedule) – Traffic Analyzer Etc. as I believe you are going to be the first to hit above 90% and then I can pass this back to ASUS ;-)

January 29, 2019 at 6:17 pm #2087Hi, I do not use any of them features, the only thing I use is the DHCP server, I have 21 fixed ip addresses and I have 8 wired devices- 3 are pcโs and 3 are tvโs and a RT-AC88U as access point and a Netgear D7000 as another wired/wireless AP, the rest I connect over Wifi, which are 4 iPads, 4 iPhones, 4 laptops plus 2 kindles fires, 1 work phone. Also others when family etc come round, not all connected at the same time but say over half? Yes itโs a lot for 1 household thatโs why I brought th 88u in the 1st place as it seemed to be able to cope?

Thanks for that and you have a very ‘hybrid’ environment,ย is interesting as it is increasingly looking like a Wifi / memory related issue?

I posted earlier I reached 91% before DHCP would not accept anymore requests and had to reboot. So please pass on to ASUS.
It’s definitely an issue as with the 502 FW I was able to go at least 2 months before I had to reboot (to install new FW – not due to an issue).

January 30, 2019 at 5:34 am #2093January 30, 2019 at 5:47 am #2094@jetspeed โ apologies, I forgot/missed that, I will add you findings to the list also ๐
No apologies necessary! We appreciate the effort you go through, even though it’s not a modem/router you are actively using.
An update regarding disabling wifi scheduling – it makes no difference to the memory leak. It’s still leaking 6MB/day. I have all the fancy stuff off. If dodgydrains observation is correct, then the memory leak is somewhere in the new wifi drivers as I use wifi and he doesn’t.
Unfortunately, I cannot test by disabling wifi for a day as all hell would break loose in the household lol.

January 30, 2019 at 6:01 am #2095The wifi is looking very likely for Memory issues.
Edit; Does not Version 1.10.06 Build 591 (stock) support Wifi Schedule disabling?
