I just dug out my DSL-AC88U and tried to get into recovery mode, without success, I will drop ASUS an email tonight and ask them if recovery mode works for DSL-AC88U and DSL-AC3100 and also ask them best way to clear NVRAM for this Broadcom model?

I should hear back from them Monday

I’m running the v9.10.06 build585 on my DSL-AC88U and I can confirm the memory usage is consistent at 39%, I have AiProtection and Parental Control on (for my devices and my son)

I bought this router a week ago and with the v1.10.05_Build503 there is a strange bug that happens if you activate the Firewall DDoS + AiProtection, basically the YouTube videos are automatically set to 240p or less, this is how bad the connection turns when you activate both settings, I haven’t tested this bug on v9.10.06 build585

Also, I have disabled 2.4GHz completely because my house has a good coverage (less than 70 dbm everywhere) but I dearly struggle with my PCE-AC68 WiFi card on my PC, it seems there is no decent driver for this card that consistently works on 5GHz only.

Sometimes my WiFi on Linux Kernel 4.18 cannot see the router so I have to switch to Windows, connect to the router and then switch back to Linux (dual boot), and on Windows I have to spend sometimes up to 1 hour trying to connect to the WiFi, very annoying, sorry for going a bit off topic here.

You have missed all the fun with the DSL-AC88U and the memory Leaks/DHCP and firewall Ports etc. Firmware Build503 was released in February, so will be interesting to see if the latest Build585 does fix the issue you detail, let is all know?

FYI: I have just tested the combination of Firewall DDoS + AiProtection and the bug is still present at Build585, this is how I tested it:

    • Go to YouTube before you activate anything and watch a video so that you kind of get an idea of what normal speed is.
    • Enable AiProtection and watch again (should be normal speed)
    • Enable Firewall DDoS and try to watch a video again.

I will give it a try later today,

I will give it a try later today,

It could be that AiProtection has is own DDoS which conflicts with the Firewall DDoS, maybe when AiProtection is on the Firewall DDoS shouldn’t have any effect?

    Well, this is theory anyways.

When you test later check if this only happens when you activate the Two-Way IPS protection, maybe that’s the one conflicting with the Firewall DDoS, I won’t test now because my wife will complain again that the Internet is slow but if you haven’t tested it I can test before bed time.

I have just tried this on my RT-AC86U with Two-Way IPS and DDoS enabled, YouTube streams at 720 – have to wait until house is empty to plug in DSL-AC88U and test again ;)

Try with Firewall enabled + DDoS + AiProtection + Two-WAY IPS, I’m quite sure I had this issue also with my old RT-AC3200 as well.

Edit: While at it quick question isn’t it redundant to enable both firewall + AiProtection? maybe I’m doing this wrong…

I should have said, Firewall was also enabled as was AiProtection

In theory, all traffic is managed (goes via Trend Micro) so in Theory, the Two-Way IPS should intercept all DDoS attacks before they even reach you router.

In reality (and at a basic level) traffic goes to and from your router directed via DNS, and hence Traffic can be directed via Trend Micro, but there is the potential to attack you Router directly by IP address only, so then this (in theory) can by pass the AiProtection and hence why I personally use the Firewall > DDoS option also, ‘Defence in Depth’, just incase ;)

Also, give the increase of attacks on SOHO (domestic) routers in the recent years, DDoS is less common than say DNS Changer attacks and weak Firmware from a coding vulnerability  perspective etc, so it is all relative. (my view).

@oxygen8 – OK, so I loaded Beta585 and factory reset DSL-AC88U and built from scratch, then plugged it in and left all defaults for wifi except disabled AiRTime Fairness

I enabled AiProtection and Two-Way IPS and all the others, and left Firewall OFF, Running YouTube , Edge and Chrome streamed a video at 720P and Internet Explorer was 480P (same video)

I also tested on both 2.4 and 5Ghz wifi, and still no low res streaming was noted, I also then found a low res video on Youtube and indeed it streamed at 110 (I think) so YouTube Auto for video stream quality is working corectly

I then enabled Firewall and turned on DDoS and conducted same tests and the results was the same,.

Maybe worth factory resetting your router and build from scratch (not backup) and see if this helps?

This router as yet does not support MU-MIMO, so unsure if this is causing issue in busy wifi house ?
