I did factory reset and still, same issue, I didn’t restore any configuration and set everything from scratch, about the memory usage it is strange, sometimes when I restart it stays at 39% consistently, others it is pegged at 55%, how do you make it go down to 39% again?

It looks like a timing issue, like a service starting before another service on rare occasions.

I guess the Firewall DDoS might be related to Virgin Media as ISP, not sure now.

If you plug back in your original Virgin media device, do you still stream from YouTube at a higher resolution? just seeing if any other device shows low res streaming ?

Mine is sitting at 55% and in essence, the more services running (AiProtection) etc, the more RAM is used, unlike Windows Memory, using more RAM is good, to a point as this means the CPU is being used less, do not worry about CPU usage unless its usage keeps increasing?

Apart from that, Enabling DDoS should not effect Streaming quality, it would be good if other DSL-AC88U owners reading this thread could also check, just to make sure?

I am with BT Fibre (FTTC) and was with PlusNet and had no issues, Virgin Media not familiar with, are you on ADSL/VDSL/Fibre etc?

I’m using the Ethernet WAN, it is connected to a cable modem, I bought the router because of the future proof ADSL and Ethernet WAN support, I have so far enabled Firewall, AiProtection, Parental control and the scheduler, it is now sitting at 39% consistently.

What I find strange is that few times it goes up to 55% and stays there, or sits at 39% and stays there.

Before I factory reset it this morning it was sitting at 39% for more than 24 hours so only sometimes when you start/restart it goes up to 55% and never go down, that is strange, I’m a software developer and I mostly work on Linux so I kind of know how Linux uses the memory.

So the question is: Why sometimes when you start/restart it stays at 39% and others at 55%? That might not be a memory leak because it is not going up but surely looks like hugged RAM.

Also, when it is at 55% I can only get 170 Mb/s when I test with my ISP, when it is at 39% I get 240+ Mb/s which what I have contracted (both through the WiFi)

I know what you are saying, but you can’t deny the overwhelming evidence that this smells like a bug.

A bug does sound more likely, especially as you are using WAN port for connectivity to ISP supplied kit.

ASUS are releasing end of this month a new Stock Firmware (official) for the DSL-AC88U, so will be interesting if they iron out this “feature” along the way ;)

    Hey Sentinel,

you mentioned that DSL-AC88U doesn´t support MU-MIMO yet. Does it mean that ASUS is planning to integrate that technology into this router? Thanks.

Hi @Damis, Yes ASUS do plan to implement MU-MIMO, but unsure of timescales at the moment?

This is a bug in this beta – it’s the AI protection not starting. When memory is 39% used, turn AI protection Off and then On again and memory will go up to 55%. It’s an issue with AI Protection not starting sometime after a reboot. I noticed this a while ago and Asus are aware of this issue and are working on fixing it.

If memory is 39% with AI Protection turned on – then the service isn’t running. If memory is around 55% used, then that’s how you know AI protection is working.

This is bad I guess, is the AiProtection that slow on this version then? I didn’t have speed issues on my RT-AC3200 but I was using the Merlin firmware which is a shame they don’t support the DSL versions of the routers, I wouldn’t be here scratching my head.

It’s a beta remember, it will, hopefully, get fixed in the official release.

Hi, anyone had any issues with the 2.4GHz band on build 585? mine seemed to of died, LED out on the modem but in settings the radio is enabled and logs display it as 0 degrees, tried factory resetting and downgrading firmware, is there a way to clear nvram on this modem? or is this a hardware issue? i hope not.

I spoke with ASUS and have tested these options, seem to work OK for Putting DSL-AC88U into recovery mode (Rescue Mode) and for Clearing NVRAM, see below link

Thanks, i contacted ASUS also and they said that in my situation it is a hardware fault the chip is dead, so got a refund and a new ASUS modem.

    Thanks for getting that information.

Hello, i have an italian ISP (Vodafone) that requires the host-uniq field in order to work. I’ve tried different beta firmware, build 546, 568, 583, 585 but nothing to do, it doesn’t work. Link is up but vdsl is disconnected. I’ve read of this behavior from different users and they are sure is a firmware bug. For example the same settings on an asus dsl-ac68u works with no problem. Perhaps some of you know a beta build with the host-uniq field working correctly? Thanks in advance (and sorry for my english :P )

Beta 527 was when this service was supposedly introduced, but was then pulled because of Security Issues, but a lot has changed since then, I will drop ASUS an email and ask them for a version they believes works with host-uniq field.
