I have been testing the latest GNuton’s Asus Merlin beta for nearly 10 days (388.2-gnuton0_beta1)
https://github.com/gnuton/asuswrt-merlin.ng/releases
Dirty flashed it over 22525 and it has been working flawlessly for my use case.

May 8, 2023 at 3:50 pm #24324Great, not sure why but via Browser, after clicking the ‘Check Update’ button, a message should appear saying ‘The router is checking the ASUS server for the firmware update’ the Firmware Update button should appear only if any new firmware is available.
Has the ‘Check Update’ button worked in the past for your XT8 with simular message as above, what normally happens if no firmware is found ?
I ask as the error message is pretty generic (not your fault) and could also be a result of something else like a recent change in DNS settings etc.
Out of curiosity, if you have the ASUS App, can you see if this has a simular message after checking for firmware update. ?

May 8, 2023 at 11:19 pm #24340The Check Firmware button has worked in the past, it’s only been the past few days it’s been reporting that it’s unable to connect to the server, normally it would report “The router’s current firmware is the latest version”. When I checked via the App, it said “Your AiMesh system is up to date”.
With regards to the DNS, I’ve always set my routers to Cloudflare 1.1.1.1 & 1.0.0.1 which has never been an issue in the past, but out of interest I changed it back to “Get the DNS IP from your ISP automatically” and the result was the same.
Update. Something didn’t feel right so I rebooted my Virgin Media hub and now it’s working. Note to self, when you reboot your router remember to also reboot your Modem.

That is good news and thank goodness it was an easy fix in hindsight

May 12, 2023 at 1:52 am #24407Looks like ASUS is not only being complacent with their Router/Modem FW, but even worse with Motherboard bios and support. ASUS really need to pull their socks up or will start to suffer:
Content creators on YouTube are ripping into ASUS now, quite rightly too.

May 17, 2023 at 8:59 am #24505I have flashed to this release. There is still no option to set 5GHz-2 password via the app. I set it up via the web GUI

Good to hear you have flashed across to this release, No mention of fix is the ASUS ZenWiFi AX (XT8) Firmware version 3.0.0.4.388.23285 changelog, so hopefully something ASUS are still working on.
I suppose it could also require the APP to be updated as well as ASUSWRT, ?

I think this is more likely something that the APP team need to sort out.

June 17, 2023 at 4:05 pm #25236Judging by how quiet this thread has been lately, I guess 3.0.0.4.388.23285 has been working well for most folks.
I’ve had my main desktop connected the the MikroTik for the past couple of months, so I haven’t been paying as much attention to the XT8 network, but I logged in this morning and the up-time is 31+ days, with a system log dating back to June 2nd! CPU and memory look good as well. Seems like the most stable fw in quite some time.

My uptime has been 20+ days now. I think the stability/instability is due to individual setup, but for me and my setup the latest FW 23285 has been stable.
I mostly use it for parental control – time scheduling. With the full 16 devices in the list I have 166MB ram free after 20+ days. I cannot complain at all.

It does appear very stable, but my mesh node still likes to drop to 2.4GHz for no reason and sit there until I reboot the node (simply optimising doesn’t work). I have no idea what causes it, especially as the 5GHz signal reported is always good (-52dBm) but it reports 2.4GHz as poor at -51dBm…
I now fix the backhaul at 80MHz too.

Have you ensured ‘DFS channels’ and untick the include check box and is Smart Connect on or off ?
