I won’t be suprised if modem with broadcom chipset will be better on his line, hope that these FEC errors don’t turn in to CRC as there will be no FEC on downstream if he manage to jump on fastpath.

Given @Bully line history, I think also Broadcom should be more robust with his noisy line –

April 21, 2020 at 6:56 pm #6618April 21, 2020 at 9:15 pm #6619I noticed while I had the HG612 powered on to check I had unlocked it and to change its IP address for about an hour it got fairly hot, is that normal?

April 21, 2020 at 9:33 pm #6620Leave him on, it may get a little warm. Check stats from telnet or dsl stats program (gui give wrong info) and see if there is excess amount of errors. If it’s really hot and there will be a lots of errors than it may be no good, but if amount of errors will be low with warm modem it will mean that just working hard 😉
Edit,
With 40 milions of FEC per day you have really low chances to get any better.

April 21, 2020 at 9:42 pm #6623Tried a quiet line test (not in test socket) and there is noise on the line.

April 21, 2020 at 9:45 pm #6624I believe you need to do on test socket where everything else is disconnected, if you do on filtered faceplate your other telephone (extension) may cause false results.

April 21, 2020 at 9:50 pm #6626I will pick up an old corded phone tomorrow and try that in the test socket, if there is noise I will have to contact BT.

April 21, 2020 at 9:54 pm #6627Yes, as the noise on line will indicate a fault. Did you do test on phone which is connected to extension with modem connected?

Line noise via wifi phone or corded phone should not matter, good news that you heard like a hissing / crackling noise, whilst you was listening, did the tone change of the noise as this can indicate water on the DSL line etc.?
BT responsibility ends (includes) at the master socket, . I picked up a corded phone from Argos (£8) and both wifi and corded phone had same noise.
If you do re-test make sure only corded phone is plugged into phone slot on master socket (if pos) on face plate (not test socket) unless u get bored .
Regarding BT HG612 (B) modem, they do get warm, but not hot, make sure it is not sitting on top anything generating heat and has good ventilation (not in cupboard) – the version (2) got hot but (3) were OK
If noise on line continues, I would plug back in DrayTeK 130 modem and ask BT to test line and to send an Engineer out etc .

April 22, 2020 at 5:11 pm #6634I have not plugged in the HG612 yet to use as modem. It does get more than warm after an hour just being turn on and not doing any work. It is the B version. I am hoping to do the quiet line test straight after dinner tonight. If the noise is there I will hopefully call BT tonight.
Do I have to unplug modem to do line test?

April 22, 2020 at 6:41 pm #6636The quiet line test was not as bad at the master socket with the corded phone, but can just about hear some hissing. Tried to call BT and they are extremely busy and saying only call if it is an emergency. Not sure whether to bother them with my fault or not as although the speed has dropped and i’m getting extremely high FECS i’m not getting disconnects and it is still functioning.

April 22, 2020 at 6:55 pm #6637A decision for your conscious I am afraid, but does sound as though there is some noise on the line which needs to be looked at, just depends on how long you can put up with it ?
