So as we are with BT for our broadband, there crazy price increase will be kicking in this month as we had a letter from BT stating our prices are going to increase by an additional £5 a month. Alas no clean way out of our current BT contract so really bad news until current contract expires in December 2023

March 20, 2023 at 10:43 pm #23260I was in the same scenario. I have some tips:
Don’t be afraid to ask to recontract to avoid the price increase. BT like many probably have many people willing to leave at this point and retentions team work in overdrive to keep customers. BT care about numbers of subscribers and quarterly reports for shareholders are due soon. There’s no point being a BT shareholder if your customer numbers are going down!
I was only 6 months into a 24 month and not only did I avoid the price increase, I was able to get them to lower my bill down by £1 a month (£25.99 now). The person I talked to said to just email them in March 2024 and they will make sure I don’t get the price increase again plus likely cheaper again.
I got them via live chat. If normal live chat don’t stop the price increase for you via a recontract I can give you the good retentions worker BT email address via private message. They seem to work most days. Just say you got the email from live chat some weeks ago.

Interesting, so the key is to renegotiate the BT contract which should avoid the price increase and there maybe an option for a better deal if any exist etc.
Great tip and thank you, I will jump onto BT’s live chat later today/tonight and see if any movement from BT’s end

March 21, 2023 at 2:45 pm #23276No problem, good luck. You want to make sure you get your non full fibre price as low as possible because BT has full fibre promise on packages and they always honor the price on personalised offers page.

You cannot avoid price increase if you take online personalised offer only via BT support staff/live chat so I will wait till April and get 150 for £25.99 as price increase term will be over. Make sure to specifically mention to support staff you would like to avoid price increase.

March 21, 2023 at 7:07 pm #23279As an update, spoke with BT’s live chat today and was put through to a real person ‘Souvik’, after advising the customer support that I wished to renegotiate my current contract and take out a new contract maybe, the BT customer adviser explained as I was in contract, this was not possible, only upgrades where possible (at a higher cost)
So I advised BT customer support that I was aware the ‘BT Retention’s Team’ could be able to allow contract renegotiate of current contract and put me on a new contract if required, all off a sudden the BT customer adviser agreed this was correct and then offered that I was able to ‘check deals and offers from our website’ and add this to my account.
So I ‘again’ refereed to the Fibre 2 package (BT website offer) I am currently using, but customer service said this was not available on my account….
So challenged the fact I could choose any service as part of renegotiated contract, but not the Fibre 2 service, I asked for the Fibre 1 package and same response, customer service advisor, I asked why as this is a current offer and they advised, not possible on my contract…. “FFS”
So BT customer service did offer for myself to telephone their BT’s values team on 0800 800 150 – so will chat with them later this week hopefully

Edit: if Plusnet offered IPv6, I would be gone in a heart beat

March 21, 2023 at 8:01 pm #23284Oh you got one of those support workers… yeah it’s like a lottery sometimes. When I get one of those I quickly just end the conversation and try again.
I don’t know how to private message on here but this is the support staff that really helped me with deals: xxxx@bt.com
Once you have the email I will edit it out (or if you can do it for me). I doubt many people will check the thread before you see this anyway. Email something like:
“Hey xxxx we spoke a couple weeks ago about recontracting on live chat to avoid the price increase. Is there anyway we can look into this now?”
Good luck!

Indeed and very well put ‘support worker’ , I may just try my luck again on Live Chat in a couple of days, just incase I manage to find a more reasonable support worker this time

I have copied email address and many thanks for your expertise in haggling online with BT

March 21, 2023 at 9:06 pm #23287March 24, 2023 at 12:53 pm #23318So as a follow on, Tried Live Chat again and this time connected to an chat agent in UK and after usual security questions etc. it transpired this individual was part of retention team.
To cut a long story short, I was told that if I am currently in a contract, then no new contract can be negotiated until 3 month before then end of my current contract.

Alas for myself, a missed opportunity with BT’s current offers, but hopefully useful for others reading this thread whom are in contract and wish to renegotiate.
@daviddoran – I did email that individual whom you was kind enough to pass on their email address, but as yet have not had a response. In a completely sane world, madness is the only freedom (J.G.Ballard).

March 24, 2023 at 1:43 pm #23321I wonder if I just got really lucky or it’s because they knew my area was close to getting full fibre so tried extra hard to keep me. While you wait for that person to respond (they should anyway) try this also just to see:
Log in to BT and then at the top tabs you should see Broadband > Upgrade Broadband

It should say something like “searching out our personalised offers”. See if any of these are better deals than what you currently have. If they are better you can mention these to retentions team who will have to honor it and that should also mean avoiding the price increase when mentioned.

March 24, 2023 at 2:14 pm #23323Luckily, the individual on Live Chat today was kind enough to pass on their email address, so I can contact them directly later this year.
Thank, I will Log onto BT later and see what offers are present

March 29, 2023 at 7:50 pm #23505I did log on but nothing of interest from current offers that did not involve increasing my subscription portfolio
Interestingly, I did have an email back from the individual you kindly gave me for the contact at BT’s retention team, alas they also say I cannot really look at offers until the last three months of my current contract

You was very lucky with your deal

March 30, 2023 at 4:35 pm #23510I wonder if it’s because my area has full fibre they try extra hard to keep me or they look at how long I have been with them (over 10 years) in deciding if I should get good deals.
After how they have been with you it may be time to look at another provider.

March 30, 2023 at 6:11 pm #23511To be fair, BT have not done anything wrong, just not been over helpful, they are a business and not a charity, which is a real shame for myself, but I will be looking for a new provider come Xmas time

I did read, Ofcom to review inflation-linked telecoms price rises, which could be good …

October 17, 2023 at 7:51 pm #27585Hi all,
Had a email recently from BT saying they know my contract isn’t up yet but they have some deals and I can renew now.. So clicked the link and…. the price is more than I’m paying now for the same speed etc.
I already know PlusNet are cheaper for like for like speed so just going to wait till my contract ends and then probably move ISPs unless BT offer something better or an alternative ISP shows promise.
I was going to go with a new local supplier BUT they have had a few issues and are now being bought out so think I’ll give them a miss, shame as the price was cheaper than BT and PlusNet and slightly faster speeds with the bonus being the same upload and download speeds but not worth the risk as looks like they are changing what they are offering going forward so not likely to keep those prices. So looking more like PlusNet will gain my business at present as price is cheaper than BT plus I can ditch my landline so wont be paying the £220ish a year for the line :)
Have you looked at your broadband @UK Sentinel? I recall you saying yours ran out in Dec 2023 and can switch in last 3 months so wondered if you have indeed done that yet or just looking into it?
Kev
