June 4, 2019 at 9:31 pm in reply to: ASUS – DSL-AC88U / DSL-AC3100 Firmwares (beta's) etc. Looks like a new Beta Release for the DSL-AC88U is available, this version has Telnet enabled and improved 2.4GHz wifi (I believe). Exactly same way I went, sold all Asus RT-routers and DSL-types and bought 2x AVM 7590 with 2x 7582 for mesh and now I am happy with my network first time after years with Asus troubles and new problems every larger firmwareupdate.
Had some hard time 30 years ago with their Fritz-Cards for Fax and POTS-56k modem installing on friends PC or laptops, so I could not believe they make reliable modemrouters now, turns out I was completely wrong!

nice video: https://support.zen.co.uk/kb/knowledgebase/broadband-understanding-rein-and-shine
maybe helpful to localize REIN/SHINE with an AM radio receiver at 612KHz.

I went with Fritz!Box 7590, but for sure a cheaper 7490 or what UK_Sentinel recommended a 3490 will be fine too and you get it used for down to 50β¬. I am very happy with them and came from many different Asus routers too with nothing but troubles. They offer everything in their settings and nothing is really useful or reliable working. Incredible what you can set, but it wont work because of buggy firmware while hardware could do very well. Known bugs ar never solved and new are coming with each firmware update. One step forward and 2 back … thats their behavior in my for sure personal observation.

NO, it is not related to Gnuton, only that it will be shown with Gnuton/Merlin in first place and somewhat hidden with stock firmware (or even not shown at all, cant remember).

not a single one had or posted troubles with flashing GNUton’s firmware.
But 2 had very high CPU-temps 90-100Β°C, but already with AsusWRT and first time saw it with Gnuton-Merlin!

hard time – but better to accept the fact that it passed away than waste more time for nothing.

their economy didnt grow for 2 decades and they are only 125mio population not a danger at all accepting all US limitations and many bases on their territory still some kind of occupied, you cant compare them with chinese growing 10% a year and 1 bio population fighting for leadership!

I do believe he is working on all builds as we speak, this forum is great to follow http://www.snbforums.com/threads/dsl-ac68u-asuswrt-merlin-builds-for-dsl-routers.55985/
I think @grisu provided links a few days ago, GNUton cannot work on DSL-AC88U as DSL-AC88U code was (poor) hopefully @grisu will be online later and help update us all
But I hope I am out of date and he has changed his mind
Here another interesting post from GNUton, which DSL-routers could be supported:

yes, 2 years ago and stopped any further development …
You could download GPL from Asus and compile it on your own, but they’re mostly not correct and missing things, you will be allone ;-)
Is he the same forum user? https://uktechhub.com/forums/topic/dsl-ac88u-in-ap-mode-need-help/

He probably would if possible, but hardware is much too different.
And they do NOT run AsusWRT but different firmware!!!
Similar to GT or BRT types which are not supported by Merlin for the same reason.
So it wont never ever happen …
His masters voice (Merlin): https://www.snbforums.com/threads/dsl-ac68u-asuswrt-merlin-builds-for-dsl-routers.55985/page-2#post-481013
DSL-AC68U is very similar to RT-AC68U, only WAN is changed to DSL.
There exists firmware for DSL-AC68U since 2 years ago, Hugo Gomes made a alpha build, but only insiders could download. It is not that much work, if you can compile it yourself just add DSL part to the RT-AC68U firmware and make ‘some’ corrections (descriptions for noobs like me).
That said GNUton is not a hero but knows a lot and did all the hard work just for fun and because he is able to and got this router too and tried it for himself . And as he is very friendly too he opened it for others with updates, and now the community keeping him in virtual chains.
DSL-AC88U is very different to RT-AC88U and do not even run tomato-based AsusWRT firmware which is similar for all other Asus routers we are speaking here about and Merlin supports.

Then you would have to pay much more, they have an official price much above 7590, you’ll be charged with 280β¬ if you dont return (only to lease for β¬5 per month).
Dont know if they will ever be freely sold.
You can see it on box and router label, different article numbers.
7582 DE art# 2000 2760Β while 7582 INT. art# 2000 2809
Or in support data from router:
for Germany firmware_version avm
and Internat. firmware_version avme
